Yeah, so basically I just want to know if there is a way to find out what year my bass is without the serial?

Has the Fender sign on the back on the bridge like the 80's models, also USA made.
Sunburst colourscheme, white scratch plate. (Gonna get a black one real soon :D)
Any ideas?

How long have you had that bass and do you know HOW the serial number became unreadable?

It is always a concern when we see the serial number missing from any product - because it may be stolen.

If it is just WORN off from handling, then perhaps BrotherDave has a suggestion or two. But from inspecting my own Fenders over the years, sometimes there is a mfg. date in the neck pocket where the neck bolts to the body or even on the visible edge of the neck close to the neck pickup.

+1!

It is a crime in every state (a felony in fact, in California) to deliberately deface, alter, or remove a serial number, or to be in possession of such an item.

Pics below :)
I bought the bass about a year ago, didn't mind the serial being scratched off. Yes, it's not roadworn it was physically scratched off.
Bought it online, not planning on giving her up though because of theft. (Which I can still not confirm.)
But $@!&. Troubles me greatly knowing it may cause problems.
Is there no way I can register the bass? Because If I just have to give up the bass, well that's just $@!&*% up. Losing a sick bass and a quite a few bucks.
Not gonna happen haha.
But thank you so much for all the replies! :D

There is no way physical for you to register this bass because even though you bought this bass online,....it still originally belongs to someone else who owned it but had it stolen........I personally ( & many others here on the forum would agree with me) would never ever buy stolen gear........ but that's just my opinion.

I don't really posses the money to buy a new Fender, so yeah if I see something online in my budget range, I'll be buying it. Didn't see the serial was missing until I drove to the guy.
And even then, it didn't bother me. A Fender is a Fender.
This is getting off topic haha, so no way to find out the year?
That's all I want to know, I'm a very curious person.

This thread is not off topic. There is usually one reason to remove a serial number. Maybe if the number has 666 in it and you think it's the devil bass and you are playing in a Church but that is a long shot. So it's prob stolen and now you have exposed it. Wow.

One of the first thing's a smart guitar buyer does when purchasing an instrument online is check out the the serial number to ensure it's not stolen or a fake,..... so congrats now you paid money for a Fender Bass with a scratched off serial number that you've exposed on a public guitar forum as a stolen bass that's now pretty much worth nothing, & even if you go to a luthier to get work done on it at some point ..they're gonna know somethings up with this bass ......anyway it's your business
but you have to take responsability for your part in purchasing this bass but it sounds like you don't give a crap & obviously don't have a consious ........ You say you don't posess the money to buy a Fender well you know what neither do most of us but we do this think called working for it or getting it on layaway. anyway we can't obviously help you so Good Luck.
