Hey everyone, I'm just trying to figure out what my Fender Jazz Bass is worth. I no longer play, and actually haven't since highschool (2004). I figure it's time to make some room as sell it off. The serial # is V008270, which from a little research online told me it was made in Japan in 1996-97. There's a small sticker on the back that says something about 50 years on it.. funny I never noticed it in the years I used the bass! lol

I seem to remember when I was younger someone telling me that the switches on there rather then having knobs was unusual... and don't mind the missing string, I'll change that before I sell it. lol

Anyways, what would you guys say it's worth? It's in good condition, has one knick on the bottom/back but it's not noticeable unless you're looking and doesn't effect anything.

Maybe 5 but whatever someone will pay for it is what I'd say it's worth. It all depends on a whole lot of things .

Really nice Fender Japan issue, and here in North Carolina USA I'd expect an asking price of $750 to $800 plus case. The tuxedo neck is really nice and rarely seen in a MIJ 1996 model. All 1996 Fender's got that sticker on the reverse of the headstock. It is a 1996 model year instrument because it has that sticker.

Fender Japan makes several levels of basses, usually at least 3 levels of every model. They also have a Custom Shop type operation. This appears to be a top level instrument and possibly was made only for distribution in Japan as I don't see these often.

It was made by Fujigen at Matsumoku for Fender Japan. Fenders marked MADE IN JAPAN, as this one is, are generally considered "better" than those marked CRAFTED IN JAPAN.

Really so far as basses are concerned the origin phrasing matters little since all Fender Japan bass models were made at Fujigen through 2009. It made more difference on Strat and Tele guitars though. In 1997 the CRAFTED mark appeared as Fender Japan Tele and Strat production moved to Dyna Gakki because Fujigen was doing a major expansion of the facility where they made Strats and Teles for Fender Japan. During this expansion they continued to make the basses at Fujigen while Dyna made the guitars.

Most people don't know that and generally the MADE mark instead of the CRAFTED mark is usually valued a bit higher on basses also, even though there really is no difference in the MADE versus CRAFTED basses at all.

If I had this I'd keep it. It will continue to appreciate.

I'd say 500 to 550 maybe. Heck I know of USA P's and J's selling for 650 to 750 so I kind of go by that. Your bass is a anniversary and it has the block inlays. Some one might dig deep in the pockets and give you more than what I said. Bro Dave will be here soon I bet. :D :) :P  :D :?
Okay Me and Dave were writing at the same time and he posted his first. I don't think either of us is far off of the price ( diff prices in diff places) for that bass and I say yes it will gain some value. I agree with that . Dave knows what's up. I still say he types fast or he has one of those deals you talk to and it types up the message. I'd love one of those.

Wow wasn't expecting that... I think I paid like $300 for it when I bought it and that must have been in around 2000. I'll have to put some more thought into it now.

Can one of you guys tell me, as far as having switches instead of knobs, is that how it was built, or did someone do that after the fact? I always thought that was a little strange, but I really don't know much that type of thing.

Thanks for the responses!!!

Now the decision is even tougher! Although I don't really see myself ever getting back into playing, and I could use the money.

I can't imagine anyone in my area buying it for anywhere near it's value, and I bet shipping on something that size and weight would be tough if I were to put it on ebay. :?

It's really not that big of a deal. Check out UPS or Fedex for help on how to ship. There's always Craigslist too. I bought my last bass there.

WHOOPS! Pic so small didn't pickup on the modified controls. Figure what Stoker said for a value AFTER you have it put back to original configuration. You'll have to disclose that it was modified then restored.

My estimate was for ORIGINAL Collector Class condition. This instrument is now PLAYER Class and NOTHING you can do will make it factory original again.

$500 sound fair if you get it back to original configuration. $375 to $400 as is. Sorry. But passive Jazz Basses NEVER have switches, other than the S-1 on some FMIC era ones. This one you have has possibly been modified for DIRECT recording. It makes a good recording instrument that way but that is about it.
