Only a Fender Precision sounds like a Fender Precision, but here's a setting that comes very close. Some may scoff "Oh, That's easy! Neck p'up wide open. Bridge p'up shut down tight". Sure you can do that, but I don't think that's the best sounding setting.

Jazz Bass Of Reference: 2012 American Standard
Pickups: Stock Fender Custom Shop
String Type: Flatwound
Controls: Stock Fender - No Modifications

Neck P'up: 15/16ths open
Bridge P'up: 15/16ths closed
Author's Note: I am of the mindset that your best sound quality is never wide open or wide shut. By backing off either extreme (even if only very slightly) you actually get better sound. Try it for yourself.

Tone: 'To Taste' This is a tricky one. I happen to like the Precision's famous purcussive attack and "burpy" tone quality where the bass kind of burps out the notes. I start with the tone control fully shut down and oh-so-very-slowly open until the highs just start to creap in. Don't go too far, but do go far enough. You need the highs for the attack, and mids for the 'burp'.

Action: Thumb & Fingerstyle String Plucking - right over the neck p'up or at the butt of the neck and anywhere inbetween. There is some seriously great tone here.

Application: Blues; Country, Motown, Roots Rock

Opposites Attract: Try this setting in the exact opposite with the neck p'up 15/16ths shut and the bridge p'up 15/16ths open. Start with the tone control wide open and slowly back off until finger and string noise is diminished, or about 2/3rds open. I like to play fingerstyle just in front of the bridge pick-up. This is a gloriously quintessential signature Jazz bass sound. 8)

Most of the time both pickups at full volume and series switching with the tone full on!! On occasions the tone at mid position for a warmer sound!!
