This topic deserves a poll.

Depends on the Bass & the control set up,...... on a standard Volume, Volume , tone set up Jazz bass (including my Jaco Fretless) I have the tone & bridge pickup rolled fully open with the neck pickup rolled a 1/4 to about half back.
My 2011 American Deluxe Jazz 5 & my Reggie Hamilton jazz bass have pickup pan knobs so I leave the pan knob in the middle so that I get both pickups equally & then from time to time I'll turn the pan knob a little to favor the Jazz pickup.
I usually play this bass in passive mode, & when in active mode I'll have the mids rolled back about a 1/2 I then roll the bass knob up just to before it starts to sound booomy & then I'll try to roll the treble a hair higher than the bass knob,..... but of course this set up is due to change depending on where your playing & the age of the strings on the bass,..that being said I prefer passive mode most of the time, & I forgot to mention that I have a passive tone knob on my American Deluxe that I leave rolled open.

I have volume & tone rolled fully open on my Steve Harris P-Bass.

On my Marcus Miller 4 string bass I also play in passive mode most of the time with both pickups rolled wide open & when in active mode the bass & treble knobs will be rolled around the halfway mark. This bass doesn't have a passive tone control :)

Chromeface you suggested a poll for this thread but didn't tell us how you set your volume & tone controls?
If I may ask... What Basses do you own & how do you like to set the tone controls ? You've shared with us tons of photos of bassists & basses off the internet but you never ever talk about your basses or setup,....I'm sure everyone here would like to know.....Please share :)

Jazz Bass Of Reference: 2012 American Standard
Pickups: Stock Fender Custom Shop
String Type: Roundwound
Controls: Stock Fender - No Modifications

Bridge P'up: 7/8 ths open
Neck P'up: 7/8ths closed - having the neck p'up cracked open gives a nicely taut & solid bottom
Tone: shut down totally, then crack open until the highs just leap out. stop there. this isn't very much, maybe 1/4 open. this is the address to get some very tasty & meaty mids.

Action: Pick Aggressively right in front of the bridge saddles!!! This will give you an amazing amount of full frontal attack with strong spanky highs teamed up with high mids that bark with authority. Play inbetween the p'ups for more snarling and growly low mids that cut like a Bowie knife. The bottom end stays tight & solid. Nothing flabby here. People will sit up and take notice! G-Wankers will complain!

Application: YES/Chris Squire 'Ric With A Pic' without the Ric or Chris Squire. RUSH ~ If you can't play exactly like Geddy Lee with thumb & fingers and must use a pick this is the tone setting for you! U2 - some tunes use an aggressive picked tone. REM - Mike Mills sometimes used a very aggressive tone. ELP - Greg Lake used a very aggressive picked jazz bass tone on the album 'TARKUS'. The OX - John Entwistle live was a huge bombastic in-your-face bass life force. LOUD & AGGRESSIVE! Take No Prisoners!

I neglected to say that all my basses are stock & I use Rounds (except for the fretless where I use Flats but will be switching to Rounds).
I rest my thumb on top of the bridge pickup & pluck between the bridge pick up & the bridge.

I would say that a majority will use the full/backed off setting with the treb backed off a tad or so. That always gets a nice overall sound for alot of music. The Jaco Jazz tone for Jazzers is another pop setting I would assume with more bridge than neck or all bridge. Nice. 2 very good sounds from the Jazz bizz- ace. I guess there are variations of the two settings but in my HO there are two basic sounds on a Jazzy and everything else is by-product. This should inspire much conversation. :!: Yes the Full Full knob setting could be the third sound so I will now say that there are 3 basic sounds on a Jazz. I don't change my mind much but when I do I like to go full bore and ski down the mountain naked.
WAIT!!!! Okay the forth tone would be the bridge pick up only AND the fifth tone would be the neck pickup only. So that's 5 basic tones on a Jazz. The Jazz bass is a wonderfull thing.

Here's a BEAUTIFUL setting for that full; round, grand piano like tone that Jazz basses are famous for, and no it's not studio magic

Jazz Bass Of Reference: 2012 American Standard
Pickups: Stock Fender Custom Shop
String Type: Roundwound
Controls: Stock Fender - No Modifications

Neck P'up: 15/16ths open - just throw her wide open and then back off a hair or two
Bridge P'up: 13/16ths open - back it off so that the neck p'up is clearly dominant, but not too much

Tone: 1/3rd to 1/2 open not too much treble as you don't want a lot of pick, or finger, or string noise. You want beautiful music. Not noise.

Action: Play directly inbetween the p'ups. Thumb yields a very delicious thick tone. Fingerstyle is more piano like if well plucked. Pick of course is fine if you want that purcussive attack.

Application: This is just a gorgeous all purpose setting that translates well to almost any musical genre. BIG full round bottom that may jiggle a bit dependant upon amp settings, but no flab please! Totally Solid Mids. Nicely lucusious top end that is also full and round and may also jiggle a bit. Very sensous and seductive. Shimmers with a bit of digital reverb. Readily accepts chorus; phaser, or flanger effects. Thick & Delicious!

This is one of my favorite settings. You can also reverse the p'up volumes making the bridge p'up dominant for more crystalline highs. This would most likely be the better choice for slap.

+1

The combinations are virtually endless.

I disagree. If we did the math there probably is an end to the number of tones. Granted there would be thousands but there has to be a last tone. I thought it would be okay to make it 5 basic tones. I need the dioscillator to figure out just how many tone combos there are. That will take some time though because it's in storage in Finland.

For me it was always everything on 10 - made different sounds with various playing techniques - fingers in various locations, pick usually between the pickups or between neck & neck pickup but also by the bridge with palm muting, thumb (not slapping) either by the neck or with palm muting. I put this in past tense since I don't play a Jazz anymore. But my passive Precision is the same thing - I don't like tone controls!

And speaking of tone controls, I did poll in the Precision forum

Too many variables Chicken House Willie. This thread is assumptive of basic EQ knowledge on the part of the reader, and is primarily ment to be a place to share favorite Jazz bass settings. It could also become a tutorial for heuristic use.
