I have to agree with Raginrog about the American Standard. I sold a totally mint Candy Cola/Maple/Maple on a auction and received LESS than $800. I paid over $1300 new, a couple years earlier. Painful learning experience. This guy got the bass of his life for squat.

Don't be in a hurry. Hold out for the American Standard. Watch the listings, one will come up.

Okay, I am off my soapbox.

I have friends with Squires. Pretty much they all want to update them with better electronics, or already have. I have friends with MIM Jazzes that love them. Some still talk about or have upgraded the electronics, but all are happy.

Sorry, back on the box, I would still figure a way to get an AM STD.

What he said.

MIM's are better now than they used to be back in the 90's but I've sold US P's and J's for less than a MIM Roadworn goes for. So I don't know what that means but I said it anyway. It means if you want the real real deal hangout for a Usa- they will always be a top dog bass. I'm not talking about the Usa's that are not Usa's though like HW1's and assorted what nots like that.. :?:

I might be able to get an American Standard, or at least an American Special, but it depends on how my financial situation plays out. If not, then eventually down the road I will. Whatever I do, I'm going to put some more research into it, like I did with my amp. I'll try out as many as I can beforehand, too. I'm not going to jump impulsively at the next thing that comes along. I've learned from that mistake a long time ago.

I don't know what your budget is exactly but I picked up a used AVRI '62 Jazz for $900.00. That bass GROWLS. It was a 2005. Don't know if the newer models were better (thinner nitro I have heard) but build quality etc A++.

The bass I go to more often than not is my 2008 Road Worn Jazz bass in sunburst. Very John Paul Jones and it really feels like a vintage instrument to me. It weighs in at 8lbs and, in my opinion, has a much nicer neck than the 62 reissue I have.

You could get a used one for $800.00 or less.

Yeah, the Road Worn, will be one of the ones I'll look into. I like the style of the brown shell pickguard, so that's another plus. Then again, I can always get one of those and change it out if I wind of with a bass that doesn't have one.

Hold out for the AmStd. They're constructed well, and they do their job excellently. The stock pups are so good, I won't swap them out until they die. Got one 2012 last Winter / Spring, and I'm still exploring the tonal possibilities. They are a high quality instrument.

MIMs are good instruments, and there's no shame in playing one. I waited until I could buy the AmStd, and I'm really glad I did.

Yeah, that would be nice if I can swing the payments on it. I won't really know until next month or so after the PA is paid off.

CH Willie nailed it !! he's right the current 2012/2013 American Standards (now with '60's Custom Shop pickups) are vey nice basses & they get the Job done Excellently,.....they're well worth the investment & that's exactly what the American Standard Basses are,......an investment,... I always say buy right the first time,..it's actually cheaper in the long run. IMO :)

That's true. It's best never to buy anything on impulse, either. Once you buy something and wind up not liking it, it seems like it's difficult to get rid of it and you will always take a loss. Especially these days.
