Pretty soon my PA will be paid off so I'll be in the market for a new bass. After some thought and consideration, I decided it's going to be a Jazz Bass. I feel it will complement the music I'm playing now more than a P-Bass would and I'll be coming full circle in a way since I started out on a Jazz Bass 25 years ago. Now the question will be is which particular model to choose. I suppose that's the fun part, the research and discovery. There's also budget considerations, so as much as I'd love to, I can't go all out and get one of those vintage reissues, unfortunately. Maybe someday.

If AV is ideal, perhaps a Classic Lacquer?

Or maybe roadworn, if only for that delicious Fiesta red finish:

Roadworn Jazz. Okay so they have some marks on them but they are good basses for the money-

They're just beat up versions of the new lacquer classics, so if you don't like the marks, or you just want to save some money, those are a much better route.

That said, the fiesta red is absolutely breathtaking, and the holes are already drilled for the chrome covers!

I have a Roadworn P and I use it before most of my other Fenders. I think it's a great bass and when I play it it just sings. I put aftermarket pickups in it. To me it's my old P bass. It wieghs under 9 lbs. I'd love to have the Red Jazz Roadworn also.

This is hard advice to give, with every country of manufacture putting out great instruments.

I"d probably buy a Squier Classic Vibe 60's Jazz, and just replace the tuners with Vintage Fender's. Saw one recently without the finish, looked like a good chunk or two of Alder to me...

The FSR MIM stuff is like a present from Fender, to the public. Great stuff.

The American Special is a very good Jazz, with the new alnico pickups, and all.

I've actually been thinking about a 60's style Jazz Bass. So far, I've just been watching online demos to get a general idea of the tonality of different basses. I know it's not the most accurate way to go about it (I should try to go to a shop and check them out,) but at least it will give me an idea to start with. From what I've watched, the 60's ones seem to stick out the most for what I'm looking for. I even like the sound of the Squier models, so I'm not adverse to checking those out. I have no problem with a budget instrument as long I like the way it plays and sounds. Of course, watching and playing are two different things, so time will tell on what I'll wind up getting.

Some of the "key elements" in a 60's Jazz(to me) are alnico pickups with capacitor, alder or ash for a body...and nickel hardware. Can't forget about the 4 bolt neck, either. Good luck to ya.

Yeah, I wish I could. It's out of the budget right now, unfortunately. I think the highest price I'll be able to go is an American Special, maybe American standard if I can get a good payment plan deal on it. This is why I use AMS or zZounds, because they have payment plans where you can play now and pay off in monthly installments. The down side to it is they don't have every model and colour available. Right now, I have to keep it at least $130 a month, preferably lower. Not much, but at least it's better than not at all. At least it helps the credit rating.

I think the 60's style has a certain "vibe" that's been speaking to me, lately. Then again, I've been listening to a lot Led Zeppelin lately and watching videos, so seeing John Paul Jones play his Jazz Bass is probably having a psychological effect on me. :P

We have a music store here that will put guitars on Lay-a-way. It's great. They let you pay whatever you want to as long as you keep paying for it. I've done it a few times and I end up getting the guitars out quick by making big payments . I can't wait. But there are some that go in lay-a-way for more than a year. Nice.

Yeah, lay-a-way is also a great way to "reserve" something if you don't particularly have enough cash to buy it outright, especially some sort of odd ball piece of used gear or something that there isn't a lot of. You know, the snooze you lose factor. I've had that happen a couple of times. You see something, wait on it and it's gone when you come back later.

I agree with highway...they have great quality these days...especially those 2008-09 models. A relatively new American Standard Jazz can be had for about $850 on the used market.

I have to agree with Raginrog about the American Standard. I sold a totally mint Candy Cola/Maple/Maple on a auction and received LESS than $800. I paid over $1300 new, a couple years earlier. Painful learning experience. This guy got the bass of his life for squat.

Don't be in a hurry. Hold out for the American Standard. Watch the listings, one will come up.

Okay, I am off my soapbox.

I have friends with Squires. Pretty much they all want to update them with better electronics, or already have. I have friends with MIM Jazzes that love them. Some still talk about or have upgraded the electronics, but all are happy.

Sorry, back on the box, I would still figure a way to get an AM STD.
