Wow, just double dinged my Jaco. Not sure that I ever damaged a face before. Pulled a strap off my rack, it grabbed a buddy which swung over to the stand and "boom", two dents (finish broken) from the top and underside of the strap lock - 5-6 feet away from the rack. Look up stupid and you will see my picture.

I guess I could mount that pickguard they sent with it. What a shame.

Sorry, just venting.

We've all been there....done that. Maybe not exactly the same way but......
I look at it as true, honest road wear. Adds character to the bass. My old '75 p-bass, which I gigged for over 10 years, has so many dinged places in it.....well they're all reminders of good memories now. :)

Road tested Fender basses get respect from the community.

There should be a strap featuring a likeness of Jaco, called the "Jaco Strapo".

Exactly so. Now you have a personally 'relic'd' bass. Play it with gusto, and sling it around some.

"Jaco Strapo"??? I can see now that the Benny Hill moniker is an accurate one.

The first couple of dings in a new instrument hurt the most,.......... My Jaco bass already had 3 minor dings in it when I bought it new at Long & McQuade Music,..... I looked at it as .......Well at least I don't have to worry about putting that first ding in it.. :)

But I still feel your pain Affprod,...... I recently put a small ding in my Steve Harris P-Bass,....it happened while I was plugging in the bass ....as I was picking up my cable ,..the angled jack end lightly tapped the side of my bass & voila light ding in the Blue Sparkle finish,........Damn... :(

The tortiseshell pickguard won't look right, you need a black glass sparkle one! :D

Not to worry, that can easily be fixed by any GOOD Luthier...It's called 'drop fill'...I've had a few 'dings' made to disappear that way...

True. Jaco didn't even use a case. He was noted for carrying the naked Bass Of Doom around with him everywhere. Taxi rides, parties, restaurants, park strolls...everywhere Jaco went, it went...sans case. Guess you could say it was the original "Road Worn" instrument. Neither rain nor sleet nor snow seemed to warrant casing it. Carrying it around constantly caseless worked until he propped it up against a park bench and it ran away.

He was no doubt a genius. He wasn't known for being overly protective of his axe though. Pretty much he subjected it to everything he was being subjected to at the moment. Maybe he felt it deserved to be as free as him instead of trapped inside a case. An interesting person and like most geniuses it is hard for me to guess what they were actually thinking at the time. But the freedom from the fetters of a case theory for the B.O.D. sort of makes a bit of sense. Maybe he saw a case as a prison for it. Maybe he just liked looking at it naked. Who knows?

Good Analogy Dave,...... I never thought of it in those terms,.....that being said I recently bought the Bill Milkowski book "Jaco" I heard it get's a little depressing & grim near the end.......(as would be expected as he was struggling with several Demons.)
a true genius & innovator.

His demons were huge. his life was so sad, especially the end. No doubt he was one of the greatest ever. stroker vance actually met him walking down by the beach and actually got to hold the Bass Of Doom.

Stroker Vance got to hold the bass of Doom... WOW!!
In the last few years of Jaco's life, he was so messed up on drugs & alcohol that there were a few gigs & especially one at the Hollywood Bowl where he couldn't even play,...... I can't remember where I read the article but but it wasn't long after this gig that Jaco was admitted to Bellevue Hospital in NYC ......sad so sad.... I can only imagine the torment that was going on inside him...

Been a lot of the best young artists ever, died from making poor lifestyle choices, like Jimi and Janis, And some, like Clapton and Richards, made the same poor choices but survived. Jaco seems to have had a little extra mental baggage. I don't think it was entirely self inflicted. But there is no doubt he was a talent.

Yeah he was Bipolar, & would go through episodes of mania & deep depression,.... ( Jazz legend & pianist Thelonius Monk suffered from a similar condition)
Jaco Apparently never did drugs until he was in Weather Report & they were flying high on the success of Heavy Weather & Mr. Gone.... they were getting the Rock Star treatment everywhere they went. (this was circa 1978)

I do think that all genius's are on a different mental plain,... they see & process things a little different than the average person,......... I mean to come up with the idea to take a 1962 Fender Jazz Bass & de- fret it so that you could achieve that Stand up double bass sound is brilliant,....... there were already Fretless P-Basses on the market at this time but fretless didn't take of until Jaco joined Weather Report & people started to discover this kid from Florida who played bass in a style not heard of at the time,......by 1980 many bassists were trying to emulate his style of playing...

I read that book "Jaco" and I'll tell ya it was grim. He would purposely sabotage gigs, like the last one at the Hollywood bowl by going onstage and smacking his bass at high volumes or playing something completely different from what was rehearsed hours before. He at one gig threw his B.O.D. on the stage floor and climbed on something to pounce on it, full force. Don't know how that 62 Jazz lasted as long as it did.

As far as your Jaco goes, I feel for ya. I know people say it has real 'road worn' now etc but if you are thinking resale, not so good ya know.

If it bothers you enough I would take her in for a touch-up. I leaned my Jaco at a gig without a stand "for just a second" and I took a step and heard a crash. It fell flat on it's face. Unfortunately the fall caused the wiring to the jack to come loose and I had to go to the backup. Took 5 minutes with a soldering gun to fix later that night.
I sure did not want any 'medals' on that bass but that nitro is delicate and sh*t happens.

I have a habbit of dinging new basses on day 1 of ownership for some reason. I now own 2 Road Worn Jazz basses and it is a relief to know if I bang it up I probably would not notice.

You once mentioned that you wanted to buy the Custom Shop "Jaco" so if you plan to sell this Jaco you might want to get her touched up.

Again, sorry to hear about the dings.

-Jo
