OK, So this is probably one of my more stupid questions.

I have been looking at different basses to get ideas on what I'm going to do to my Jazz Bass. I keep seeing pics of of Basses with the thumbrest below the strings. How is that a thumbrest? When I play my thimb is above the strings.

Well, on the older bass it was actually a finger rest, since early guitar players played bass with their thumbs. ( Do an image search for Elvis on bass) The P Bass was made for bass players and guitar players, btw. The thumb rest was moved up since most bass players used their fingers and didn't need the lower rest.

Don't feel bad, Chet. I was wondering the same thing myself but never thought to ask.

Now we both know.

The only stupid question is the question unasked.

It's actually the finger rest it used to be called. The J bass started the thumb rest when players used the 2 finger method. I've always used the top of the pu when I play, except for MM style bass w/the one humbucker pu on it, then I rest the thumb on the imaginary mid pu(the body)

I'm seriously thinking about putting an actual thumb rest (I would use it as that) on my MIM J Bass.

You can take the thumb-rest and apply it above the strings using the existing holes and use it there. Look up old pictures of early Fender basses and you'll see what's going on. Hope you like.

That is what I ended up doing. I like it on top of the strings.
