Hi there,
A question I recently purchased a refinished 66 jazz.
The finish however is not to my liking.
Do Fender restore finishes inhouse?
Regards Jelle

Try the custom shop.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

No. In the 60's and 70's yes. Now no.

If you are in the USA or Canada I have a page of noted refinish/restoration shops from coast to coast on my website.

The link is: http://brotherdave.com/add_majorrefin.htm

While Curtis Novak is on that list I recently learned he has suspended refinishing services so he can concentrate on a backlog of orders for his custom pickups. Pity because he was noted as doing remarkably authentic work. His online color block reference is often consulted here and I'm grateful to him for it.

Some people take theirs to an auto body shop. That is an alternative also. In fact Sims Custom Shop on my list started out painting cars and wound up painting so many guitars they decided to officially call themselves a guitar custom shop. This is fine for a solid color poly or nitro finish, but for a see through, sunburst, multi color finish or for a matching headstock then you really need someone that specializes in guitar finishing and that is not going to be an auto body shop.

Depending on the finish, stripping it to the bare wood is often the most labor intensive and time consuming step. With some of the poly sealers/primers products it is quite frustrating as chemical stripping is about useless on some of it.

Jelle,

I have a 68 Mustang out to a top quality refinishing expert in Canada. He has had it since February but told me mine should be worked on this month. Gives you some idea of the business he has from the reputation he has built. If your project isn't urgent, hold off a little in hopefully, in a month or so, I will be able to show you some detailed before and after pictures.

Best,
Steve

Thank you kindly for your help.BMW-KTM, Brotherdave and Steve
Alas I'm not in the US nor Canada, I'm in the Netherlands.
And I understand patience as I've been searching for this one for many years, so waiting while searching for a pro refin expert should only make it worthwhile.
I'll make sure to post some pics of the results when its ready say in a year or so  :D
Best regards Jelle
