Hey everybody! I need an advice… I have recently bought a Fender American STD Jazz Bass 2011, and have realized that the bridge pick-up is the same size as the neck one, the bridge pick-up opening in the body is bigger than the actual pick up. Now I am trying to understand why it is so… If these are two neck pick-ups, why are they fixed in such way? And if the bridge pick-up is smaller than it should be, why so? Has anyone ever come across such a problem?! If so, please share your knowledge. Thank you in advance.

Hmmmm, bridge pickup (at least) might be non-original.

2012 is when they started using the CS pups.....right?

What did they use before that? Could it be possible they used the normal routing, but a different size bridge pup?

Excuse me if those questions seem stupid.....but I don't know and I won't know unless I ask.....right?

The CS pickups are available only on 4-string models.

5-stringers still use AlNiCo Vs.

Not a stupid question at all & that's why we're here,.... I also learn something or pick up a tip from reading the posts on this forum, & many people wouldn't know that there was a pickup change done in January of 2012 on the American Standard Series of Basses.
The American Standard series of basses both P & J used to have Amereican Standard single coil pickups in them before being changed to Custom Shop pickups last year.
The 5 string models still have the American Standard pickups in them.
The bridge on this bass is the Fender High Mass Vintage Bridge that allows top load or string through body,....... I really like this bridge, it also came with my 2011 American Deluxe Jazz 5 & my Select Jazz Bass. :)
the Current 2012/2013 line of American Standard basses is really a lot of bang for the buck, I also like the satin feel of the neck & it even comes with a flight case,....
Nixx1969 I think you should have a qualified Fender guitar tech (found in many music stores like Guitar Center) take a look at it to answer your question....... most probably they're original but there are people outhere who like to swap out the pickups on an instrument as soon as they get it.....

Thanks James Coderre. I appreciate the info. Just didn't know if there were possibly a set of Jazz pups where the neck and bridge pups are the same size......and if so could Fender possibly use them.

I too like the satin finish on the necks, but unfortunately my 2012 Am Stnd P V has the gloss finish, but I'm not complaining. :D
I do have a 2012 Squier VM Jazz V with the satin neck. Really like the feel, but doesn't play quite as nicely as my Am Stnd.

It must be a replacement at the bridge. The U.S. Jazz has traditionally had a slightly bigger pickup at the bridge....but I don't know about the 5 stringers.

Fender used MIM pickups on the Hwy series Jazz basses..that's why many of them seemed over-routed at the bridge, with the U.S. bodies and all. The new American Specials don't seem to have this problem.

Thank you for all the info! Unfortunately, I live in a country where it is not easy to find a good technitian/ specialist who would be knowlagable enough in this subject.... In any case thank u for the tips.

I see that the Am St bridge pup is a few mm bigger, in my case, both of them are the same size. I checked the polarity, there was no noise while both of pups were on which means that they r neck and bridge. Its obvious that the previous owner changed the original set to something else... now it makes me wonder where this set is from... what brand it is... Is there a way to tell? These pups r appx 100-101 mm.

Thx in advance.

So what you're saying is you live in North Dakota...... just kidding.
Is it possible to contact the original owner or can the store you bought it at contact the original owner .......unless there's a brand name marking some where on the pick up it will be tough to figure out the brand of pick up....IMO
