Fender offered the American Deluxe Jazz Bass with a fretless rosewood fretboard between 1995 and 2007. This option is not available for the post-2010 Deluxes.

With a fretless bound dot-inlaid rosewood neck and the passive mode the American Deluxe Jazz Bass can be capable to deliver that familiar Jaco mwah fretless players love so much.

Or you can get a Jaco Fretless & turn back the volume on the neck pickup about a little past half way & leave the bridge pick up at full volume like I did ..........this also works even better if you have a Jaco Custom Shop Tribute Bass because it has a Rosewood fret board & the neck is Epoxied (like Jaco's Bass of Doom) & it also comes with Round wound strings)
The standard artist series Jaco Bass has a Pau Ferro fretboard with a poly varnish coating on the fret board & it would start chipping & Flaking if Round Wounds were used on it. All in All I'm Happy with my Jaco Bass & getting that Mwah sound is not a problem.. :)

Actually Fender Just introduced for 2013 the New American Standard Fretless Jazz Bass ......a passive mode Jazz Bass with Custom Shop 60's pickup, Hight Mass Vintage Bridge that allows string through body or Top load, a Rosewood Fretboard & Dot Side markers... & the neck must be coated with an epoxy because it comes with Fender 8250M Nickel Plated Steel Strings...

TAA DAAH !! Problem Solved..

And for $5K more you can get the Acoustic USA 360/361 preamp/amp stack to really nail the Jaco tone.

HAHAHAH!!! ......  Good one Dave.
Let's See....a Custom shop Jaco Bass $4,500. an Acoucstic 360/361 $5000. throw in the new MXR Bass Chorus Deluxe ( even though Jaco used an MXR Delay & not a Chorus the Bass Chorus Deluxe manual has a setting for a Jaco type effect) $180.
$9600.00 & add in the Tax ........For $10,000. you to can sound like Jaco :)
At the end of the day though it also comes down to Technique & your fingers (how many times has this been said here on the Fender Forum)

Right, but they introduced a fretless American Deluxe many years ago and I wonder for which reason the current Deluxes lack off a fretless option!

To save money and reduce costs, perhaps :?:
