I have a 2011 USA Deluxe which I bought brand new and have not put down since the day I bought it, I love it to bits.

I have a question which I've never been able to get a clear answer to, so I thought it was about time I asked here. The bass came from the factory with strings which - to my ears - sounded better than the current colour-coded default Fender strings (which also sound pretty good, just not the same as those older ones). So I've been trying to find out what those strings were ever since then. I'm sure the answer is fairly straightforward, can anyone point me in the right direction?
thanks

Fender changed string production a while back. Your bass came stock with the old non-color coded retainers on the strings made prior to the switch. I don't know why they did that exactly but the old strings are no longer made and unless you luck into some new old stock at a dealer somewhere you can't get them. Lots of people liked the old strings and I don't think color coding improved their market share. The string part numbers did not change, but the strings obviously are different.

The strings that came stock on the 2011 Fender American Deluxe Jazz bass are
Fender® USA Super Bass 7250M, NPS (.045-.105 Gauges)

True. But unobtainable now. The current ones are different.

True,....interesting enough my 2011 American Deluxe Jazz 5 (bought in May 2011) came with a set of 8250-5M's with the current color coded retainers ...........Got say I'm not a fan of the color coded retainers ........ Hey Dave I heard a rumor that the company that makes Fender strings is actually D'addario ...is there any truth to this? As you know .. D'addario has the same color coded retainers.

That rumor might be true or might be bunk. I really have no solid info either way.

You'd think big D would have had a patent on color coding, but the Fender packs use a different color scheme. If big D didn't have it patented I bet they wish they had now.

Fender spent a lot on state of the art string machinery not all that long ago for Ensenada. They made a big deal about it at the time. Why they'd outsource after such a major tooling expense capital outlay is puzzling.

It is a little known fact that strings were the first products to come out of Fender's Ensenada operation. 5 people were packaging up string sets in a former church building. This was before any guitar production. Look what that little string operation turned into! I think it would be folly to abandon something that works and I don't see how D'Addario could sell them USA made strings from Farmington, NY for less than Fender could make them in Mexico. It just doesn't add up, yet I can't say it isn't true.

Here's Fender Ensenada employee numero uno. Esther Marron. She was one of those working in the old church building making string sets. She says 7 people were working there with her then. Other reports have said there were 5 original string workers. She has been employed continuously at Fender ever since, and is approaching 26 years now. Maybe she'll be the Ensenada Abigail Ybarra?

When she was hired she was told it was a 6 month job. She is the most senior employee at Fender's Ensenada plant.

Thanks for the replies, I think the new strings are most likely by D'Addario, they look, feel and sound just like them.

To make things even more confusing, I decided to go searching for the old stock to see what I could find. I thought I found the right strings when I found a pack with what I assumed was the old packaging (i.e. not the red & black pack):

But I opened the pack and these strings have black silk on them. My bass came with nickel strings that were just plain, no silk, no wrap, no colour bits, no nothing. So what are these? And if not this, then what packaging did the old ones come in? I'm confused.. :?:

All of Fender's bass string set packaging states very clearly "Made In U.S.A." D'Addario seems a more likely a contractor then GHS or DR.

Very true. So do you know if the strings pictured above are in fact the old version? If they are, how come they have black silk wrapping on them, and my '11 jazz came with strings with no silk? Also - how come it says 7250L in the box at the top, and 7250S in the text in the middle? So many questions..

All the disturbing incosistencies you point out sure does make that set look more and more like counterfeits.

Why not? The Chinese counterfeit everything else. That packaging sure looks suspicious to me, and to you too.

My 2012 American Standard Jazz came with Fender® USA Super Bass 8250M, NPS, (.045, .065, .085, .110TW Gauges). They were 'silkless' just like your factory stock strings.

Someone just confirmed over at talkbass that the black silk strings are legit old stock Fenders. Did your '12 jazz have the colour coded ball ends? If not, then your bass came with similar strings to mine, which, it would seem, are a generation after the black silk strings, but a generation before the current d'addarios. Can anyone actually confirm whether that's true?

No. No color coded ends. No silks. And no, I don't trust talkbass either.

Just give them away to a poor bassplayer that needs new strings of anykind, and just buy yourself a new set.

See? Easy. Problem (that was never really a problem in the first place) Solved.

Tah-Dah! :D
