I'm trying to find the best pickup settings to emulate Noel Redding's sound. Right now my settings are: neck 5, bridge 10, tone 3. What are your thoughts?

Many factors go into a sound. The setting on the bass is just one of them.

First, the technique used will have a drastic effect on the sound. He used a pick.

Second, the actual string that was used makes a big impact on the sound. Round-wound, flat-wound, the alloy of the string, etc...
I think he used Roto-Sound Round Wounds. I am uncertain of the gauge he used (also affects the sound).

Lastly, the amplifier that was used also has a footprint. Also, was the bass going 'direct' via a "direct box."

I do understand your point. The 'Jaco Sound' is a Fender Jazz Bass with mostly if not all of the bridge pick-up with the tone almost if not all the way down (depending on the freshness of his round-wound strings). Otherwise it is pretty simple (tone wise) because most of his sound was 'DI.'

After gathering all the information you can about "Noel's" set-up, you should be in the ballpark.

Geez take it easy!!! Maybe that is the sound he's looking for. As original of a sound you have you might sound like someone to another person. Nothing here we do is really original, it's recycling old into your own mold. Chill out

The type of pickups, the type of cable you are using to plug you bass into the amp, the type of speaker cables, the room in which you are playing can also effect your tone. Even if you go wireless there are many other factors. Don't forget that studio and live rcordings of your favorite players are always "cleaned up" during mixing and mastering prior to release to the public. It is virtually impossible exactly duplicate another players sound. You might be able to come close though. Good luck
