When I started playing, I quickly gravitated toward using a pick. It got me through a lot. The only problem with them is they would slip, and either turn a bit so the flat edge was facing the string, or just fall to the ground.

Somewhere along the line I made an effort to start playing more with fingers, and I haven't used a pick for years. I just mess around with them sometimes while I'm practicing.

I recently tried a pick again. With a bit of arthritis I have gotten a bit slower. Sometimes I have to intentionally simplify a riff. I hoped a pick would help me with that, but I didn't like the sound and didn't give myself enough time to work that out and become proficient.

I may try again someday, till then, fingers.

You might be waiting a long time. I have arthritis too. I find it doesn't slow me down when I'm playing with fingers, but it causes me a helluva lot of pain in my wrist after a short time when I'm using a pick. Playing with fingers allows my wrist to be straighter.

Fingers. I've only just started playing bass a few months ago, after years of guitar playing.
Actually, what got me into bass was switching from picks to fingers on guitar, sort of a natural progression, in a way. It got to where I was spending so much time picking out bass lines on my guitars that I figured I might as well get a bass. So I did, and now I'm lovin' it!

I played today, mostly with my fingers, but some with a pick.

Sometimes you need a pick to get the proper rhythm.

But mostly fingers.

Nice way of putting it - why limit yourself by only using one technique? These days I mainly play fingers with my band, but at other times I've been more 50/50 or even mainly pick.

Not so nice way of putting it - well, I'm not going to say it. Just remember that Paul McCartney, Chris Squire, Joe Osborne - these are some of the giants of bass playing in a variety of genres and they are pick players. You don't have to play with a pick, just please don't put down those of us that do.

Don't forget to add Foo Fighter Nate Mendel, who has a Fender P Bass Signature model to the pick player list.

I play primarily with a pick, but also play fingerstyle for some songs/sounds.

I like the sound of a pick..as long as you're palm muting along with it. Some people use a sponge under the strings for that tone.

I keep my plucking nails real short. You get an inconsistent bink thing happening..otherwise.

I apologize Mr. Vance - I just don't think it's funny because it upholds a stereotype that has nothing to do with reality and it's hurtful as well. I guess it's kind of like drummer jokes - yeah they're funny but when you tell them around drummers and the drummer's feelings really get hurt then maybe it's time to rethink the humor. Can you tell this anti-pick bias strikes a nerve in me?

OK, I'll get off my soapbox now! "Did you hear about the bass player who locked his keys in the car? Took him an hour to get the drummer out!" 8)
