Just to switch it up a bit I thought I'd mention 2 great guitarists who don't use a pick (or seldom use a pick.) they are Jeff Beck & Mark Knoffler ...

Indeed, I've an old friend who's a consummate slide player that put down the pick years ago and plays thumb & fingers 'hook' style. He's developed some superbly subtile dynamics and just has an eerily emotive tone to his technique. He plays a vintage pre-CBS strat through a reissue '59 Bassman. To say that he is killer is an understatement.

I hear ya, that's how I feel about Jeff Beck's playing, ...the way he uses his fingers in combination with the volume knob & whammy bar,......so much feel & emotion.
a recent example would be his version of The Beatles "A Day in the Life" or pretty much any track from his 2010 release "Emotion & Commotion" in which many tracks were recorded with The London Philharmonic Orchestra.......simply awesome...

Currently fingers only.

Eventually I want to get comfortable with a pick. It's most suitable for some stuff, and being comfortable with it adds versatility. And, coming to guitars/basses late, my fingers might never become fast enough, so a pick might be necessary in some cases.

Also interested in using my thumb ... and maybe THREE fingers (not just 2).

So much to experiment with, so much to learn. :D

Fingers for most of the stuff I play (blues, country, etc.) but I have been trying to use a pick for a couple of songs, like "Rumble". Also, working on trying to get "tic tac" sound that some of old country songs had.

Besides pickers are not very sucessfull in music.

Really - I thought Carol Kaye, especially, was very successful!

I thought Paul McCartney was pretty successful also, but I could be wrong.

I play bass mostly with my fingers--actually a lot with one finger.
I also do down & up picking with it--mostly up with the fleshy part of my finger--but some down with the nail.

I have used a pick at times, and have nothing against that--but I vastly prefer my fingers over a pick--for what I do.

I am a finger style guy. If I need a sharper attack I use my index finger like a pick and have the finger nail hit the string. I am always dropping picks so that is why I don't use them even when playing guitar.
ABS :D

So spammers can flood the forum with useless spam links (see the Fender Lounge for a bunch of posts by someone going by the name "oemxerting"), yet I can't say the currently socially acceptable 3 letter word for one who prefers the company of a member of the same sex, you know that starts with "G" and ends with "Y" with an "A" in the middle? I get redacted saying that word but the spammers can post anything? SHEESH!
