I bought a used fretless Jazz. Original owner put a brass nut on it. As soon as I played it I noticed a buzzing on the open A string. Uhg. All due to the nut although I doubt it was because it was brass....although...I never ran into this until I played a bass with a brass nut.

Any nut can be cut too low, but I would check out a lot of other things on that fretless before blaming the nut. Many players set up their fretless basses to buzz when played open.
Adjust the action before dumping the nut. If it is still bad then go ahead and replace the nut with bone or tusc or just adjust the brass nut by raising it and re-cutting the A string slot.

Good luck with your bass.

Thanks BC....just tried adjusting action and can't get rid of that buzz. Looks like a nut replacement is in my future. A daunting task for myself since I have not ever done this. I have seen enough out there on the net to get through it. That buzz is just too much to ignore.

It's no surprise to me...and a few others.

This guy goes through basses like prostitutes go through johns.

Mr. N is quite prolific. Most of the basses you'll see him with he's had before. Its fun to guess which one returns next. Didnt think he'd go from the 'Stang back to Windy.

Thanks James. The nice thing about the 4003, you can get the 4001 sound from the 4003 by the classic setting in the bridge tone button. When it's pulled up, it gives the 4001 classic sound. Push down, back to the 4003. I haven't used the Rick "O" Sound on it yet. The Jazz, and the 4001 can be pretty close, depending on strings being used. I would go with a 4001 over the Jazz. I like the shape of the neck on the Rickenbacker. The Ric's stay more even in size as you go up the neck.
The shop I got the Mapleglo in, had a Fireglo, and a Midnight Blue. All three at the same time. A Jetglo sold a week before the three other colors showed up. I liked the Caribbean Rosewood on the Mapleglo a bit better than the the other two.

So far I have noticed a small difference in tone but not a lot. It's still a nice addition to the jazz and I am glad that I pulled the trigger on it :)

Nice!!! & with regard to the Jazz sounding pretty close to the 4003 ...I have to agree ...... I found that I can get a Rick type sound on my Marcus Miller Jazz Bass ...with the active switch/ 2 band EQ engaged .....that being said I'm comparing the sound of my Marcus Miller Jazz Bass with 4003 basses I've played at the music store, & bands like Yes & early Rush recordings when Geddy Lee was using a 4001

Paul McCartney used a 4001 on some Beatles tracks too.

Yes I know, ..... I liked how he sounded with Wings, I remember buying Wings Over America when it came out in 1976, I was 12,..... I listened to it over & over,.......He was probably one my earliest influences,.... :)
