Recently I've been looking to increase the growl and bite of my Jazz so I got a brass nut but have yet to put it in. Has anyone on here played with a brass nut? Any tips or advice?

Edit: Also any tips on removing and installing the new nut would be greatly appreciated :)

The Rodger Waters Precision comes stock with a brass nut. 8) But I've never played one.
Although this is a Jazz bass you're talking about, I did hot rod my '76 Precision in '85 and had my luthier instal a stainless steel nut along with a Badass bridge. For great tone it was a significant upgrade especially with roundwound strings. Very solid with flats too. Glad I made the modifications.

My tip is to pay the $$ and take it to a luthier.

But let me just say that I am very well pleased with the quality of the synthetic bone nut on my 2012 American Standard Jazz and also the HMV bridge. I won't be changing them at all. :)

I had a Rodger Waters Precision with the brass nut. I really don't think you can say how the brass nut would work on a Jazz. The pups are different, the Rodger Waters Precision has a Maple fretboard, and a vintage bridge. They will possibly sound different just from those three parts.

Brass nuts sound great on some other basses..but brass changes the sound of a Jazz/Precision too much. It ends up not really sounding like a Fender anymore. Maybe change the nut to bone, if anything.

I kind of agree on that. The brass nut on my one off is just what the bass needs but on a Fender- no --that's a mod I forgot I did to my 74 way back when. It did change the sound and as soon as I could afford to change it I did. I went bone. I would go bone on almost any guitar. The Cyclovac nuts Fender uses are pretty good.

I forgot when I had the Roger Waters Precision, I had the Nylon strings going through the nut. Most everyone else is using an uncovered metal string through the brass nut. I thought it sounded great. But that's just me.

I have a brass nut on a '72 Jazz bass and on my '66 Precision bass.
I don't hear any difference in the tone of those basses compared to a bone/plastic nut.

How many open strings do you play? That is the only time a nut comes into play as any kind of a tone contributor or subtractor on your bass.

You guys are imagining things IMHO.

Why did you instal brass nuts on your basses?

I do agree with you on open vs. fretted. Frets are made of metal. Right?

Of course if you really want growly growly bass, you go fretless with roundwound strings. Oh! And a 300 watt all tube Super Bassman wouldn't hurt your growl factor attainment one bit.

I like brass nuts because they don't break. I carry my basses in gig bags and therefore they are subjected to bumps that can break a bone or plastic nut. That is the only reason.
I think a nut may have more tonal effect on a guitar, I haven't really noticed a big change on my basses, but to be fair, I have had those nuts on those basses for a long time, so maybe I just can't hear a difference because I am so used to their tone with the brass nuts.

I bought my '72 Jazz with the brass nut already installed. It is a 70's workhorse bass that has Dimarzio pickups, a Bad A*ss bridge (first version) and the brass nut.

My 1966 Precision had a broken nut when I bought it. I actually saved the original nut but I had Danny Gatton(Yes, the famous guitar player he did repair work back then) install a brass nut for me back in 1974.

It is still on the bass and it works great.

Hmmm, I was thinking of going with a brass nut as well. Not for tonal reasons, but because brass is less likely to break...presumably.

I bought a used fretless Jazz. Original owner put a brass nut on it. As soon as I played it I noticed a buzzing on the open A string. Uhg. All due to the nut although I doubt it was because it was brass....although...I never ran into this until I played a bass with a brass nut.

Any nut can be cut too low, but I would check out a lot of other things on that fretless before blaming the nut. Many players set up their fretless basses to buzz when played open.
Adjust the action before dumping the nut. If it is still bad then go ahead and replace the nut with bone or tusc or just adjust the brass nut by raising it and re-cutting the A string slot.

Good luck with your bass.
