I think you need a 3/16th inch SAE (American) size hex key. If you have Metric keys, none of them will work. Fender uses SAE hex keys for truss rod adjustments. Stewart-MacDonald has a very nice wrench available for this purpose. Also there is a Fender tool for it. It is available lots of places. It looks like this:

Is that Allen wrench key also suitable for heel-mounted truss-rod adjustments?

Yes it will work on the Select basses & current American Standard,American Special & American Deluxe Basses ( it's comes with the bass as case candy with a strap, cable, etc..)it will work on the Mark Hoppus bass, Marcus Miller 5 string Bass, it won't work on heel accessed basses like the Jaco Pastorius Fretless, Reggie Hamilton Jazz Bass because they're vintage style slotted access & I don't think it will work on the Vintage Re-issue basses because the web site says they're Vintage style heel access.( probably the same deal as the Jaco Bass, where you use a screw driver to adjust the truss rod.)
The Hex key will work on any truss rod that takes a 3/16 hex.
