ALSO IS THERE A CUSTOM SHOP SERIAL THAT STARTS CZ. For example CZ5 would be Custom Shop 2005. Usually there's a Custom Shop logo on the back of the headstock.

I'm GUESSING 2001. Custom Shop has several different serial schemes and I don't see them enough to understand them all. Some may follow conventional formats and others may not or it could be they are all unconventional.

There is one "R" scheme for Time Machine/relic models.

There is the "CS" series seems easier to decode by the 3rd digit but I am not sure if the decoding system I've heard actually jives with all of them or if what I've been told by dealers is hogwash. There is also a "CN" and a "C" scheme. Some people say there is no correlation in the 3rd character on a "CS" or "CZ" serial or the 2nd character in a "C" serial being the year and if it matches up it is a coincidence. Sooooo....

To be absolutely certain I'd suggest you check with Consumer Relations. Send them the serial and ask what year it was made. I'm just guessing based on previous experience. They have several formats for sure. Their contact info follows:

I own a Jazz Bass, the serial number is: E95808. You can see that it's E9+4digits.

But here: http://www.fender.com/support/articles/ ... ct-dating/
I see: E9+5digits

I bought it used in France in 1994, I guess it's a 1989 model, but I don't understand the serial number. Can you help me?

Thank you,
Régis.

Custom Classic Jazzes made prior to 2001 were based on the American Deluxe Series basses produced between 1995 and 1998. They're often referred as "American Classics".

It doesn't decode as a production instrument using my usual sources, however export models sometimes won't. The serial may be a different format since it was an export model sold to a European distributor. A different serial format is used to lock the instrument out of the FMIC domestic warranty which is a different warranty system than the warranty offered by foreign distributors who have to operate their own warranty system. Contact Fender Consumer Relations directly through the contact info posted above in this thread and ask them directly.

Thank you, "Fender Consumer Relations" has answer to me. Their serial number database begins in 1993, but here his the answer:

"This would match the specifications below being produced in '89-'90.
Model Name: American Standard Jazz Bass® (Early)
Model Number: 019-2300
Series: American Standard Series
(...)"

I have found 2 other Jazz Bass with E9+4 digits, in France, they look like the mine:

And both the others also appear to have been export instruments since they are not in North America.
