You are listening to a concert from 43 years ago, to a Jazz bass played by a virtuoso, through two acoustic 360's accompanied by John Bonham on drums and you wonder why you don't sound like that?

Who does?

You can't compare your bass sound with anybody else's, esp. a top notch player such as JP Jones!

He is using flatwound strings on his J-bass through a very large amp at the time.
Plus, he is John Paul Jones.

I've got news for you.- nobody is going to sound like him!
Stop driving yourself crazy with trying to sound like famous players. Learn from them but develop your own sound.

Yeah- I was just going to say that pickups alone prob won't make you sound like anyone. New pickups may not even make your bass sound gooder . You could replace every part on your bass except the neck and body and it still may sound like a hunk of pavement. Some times you may need to throw a bass in the campfire. It may smell better that way at least. I love the smell of a campfire in the morning.

Probably Rotosound flats. He was a long time Rotosound user on bass but used other sets also. He also is noted to have adapted strings for other instruments to guitar use, specifically banjo strings for the 6th string on an electric guitar. He was last known to be using Elixir bass strings, which is probably part of an endorsement deal however using Elixir strings would have been impossible in that video.

you're correct Dave,... John Paul Jones is currently used Elixir strings... Here's a very cool informative interview from 2010with John Paul Jones that was done by D'addario:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qaa1axJ63Qg
Ocreancloud watch part's one & two & you'll know why you don't sound like JPJ aside of the fact that you need an Acoustic 360, John Bonham , Rotosound flatwounds, & Jimmy Page producing you. :)

I've read that he used both rounds and flats, but can't remember where I read it.

T-Bone Wolk did the same thing (mixing flats and rounds) on his P-Bass sometimes.

I'm sure every bass player goes through love/hate relationships with both string types...even professional musicians.
