I think Brother Dave has talked about the Silver Barrel before. Maybe he could expound on it some more if he reads this. I'm wondering if a different cap (like the ones he likes) would sound better in my Ash Jazz(72). I think Dave is an "orange drop" guy.
Don't get me wrong- the 72 sounds pretty smoothe and good but I think I like something just a little more..... I don't know.

I took it over to my tech before sending the pup off for a rewind. It turns out that was a good move. He re-magnetized the pickup and it has enough juice back that the rewind really isn't necessary. I guess that's why he is the tech.....

He also cleaned it up a bit more than I had for n/c. I put the chrome covers on it tonight. Very dapper.

I think we had a magnetiser at the place I used to work at. It was old and weird looking.

I just want to talk you out of that 1938 Dioscillator!

Anyway, here is the cleaned up and completed 72 Jazz, and a pic with it's sister, the 74 Precision. You can sure tell which one spent it's life in a case. The natural finishes are actually a bit closer than the camera shows, but still a noticeable difference.

Nice- How is that bass sounding anyway? Do you use it at gigs? I've used mine once at a gig. I have a hard time thinking about using the old basses at gigs. I know I should but just can't make myself do it. The main reason is because I have other basses. I'm real careful at gigs when loading and unloading. I doubt the old dogs would get ripped off anyway but it's all mental I guess.

The Dioscillator never really worked like it was intended to.. You probably wouldn't really want it. You could end up imbedding yourself in the hull of a ship if you're not used to operating it. I'm talkin' feet and lower body inside the boat and your torso, arms and head on the outside.

The bass sounds good now. Still a bit wimpy at the bridge pup, but very usable. I have not gigged with it yet. I gotten hooked on my AV57P for gigging lately. One of the most mellow basses I have.

I understand about gigging with your oldies as I have just gotten past that in the last year or so. I have a pair of Ibanez SR-500s I used for most gigs because they are so often in areas where there are chances of salt in the air, sand, etc., but I have finally gotten past it. I even used the AV57 on a small party boat sunset cruise! Would never have considered that two years ago. When I croak they will just be sold anyway, no one else in my family has any interest in them.

I have been doing some gigs with an Outlaw Country band and the places we play -- I would never tell anyone where I was playing. And those kinds of places I would never take my good guitars. One place is real bad. Gigging down in Fla has to be pretty cool. I lived in Fla a couple times. There wasn't much music stuff going on where I was.

I think this thread has died except for you and me, so let me ramble for a couple minutes.

I'm a Cheesehead, moved here 12 years ago. We have a lot of good music down here, but more blues and jazz than rock. Since moving I have really gone more deeply into the blues as there are some outstanding blues bands, especially around the Sarasota area where they host a huge blues festival each year. The bands I sit with primarily play blues and classic rock. I really enjoy the feeling you can put into your music with blues.

The only thing I don't like down here, is whenever you play an outdoor venue, everyone expects some Jimmy Buffet. I like Jimmy just as much as anyone else, I really do, but after playing Margaritaville to requests twenty billion times, it gets to you a bit. It's like Groundhog Day or Deja Vu. You know it's going to happen, just a matter of when. Typically an intoxicated young lady walks up and asks "Canuplaymargaaaaaaaaaaaaaritaville...hic?" You can see her coming, you know what she's going to ask. ARGGGH!

But back to basses. There is a rather corrosive atmosphere here, as you can imagine, so I do what I can to stay safe. I wipe down each time a gig is over. I recently started using my better basses outdoors, maybe a year ago (?), and when it's time for new strings I really take it apart and clean it thoroughly. I don't pull the neck, but I spend a good deal of time cleaning before setting it up again. In my business we use dielectric grease on connections and components of outdoor commercial equipment, off road, heavy equipment, commercial turf equipment, etc. that we build wiring harnesses for. I am playing with that on one of my Ibanez. So far no problem except the pickups. Have to seal them better as sand gets under them and into the grease.

I am sure using these basses outdoors is going to have a long term negative effect, but I want to enjoy them (and I'm not getting any younger), and the best way to enjoy them is letting others enjoy them with you - so I just do the best I can to keep them clean. I really suggest you do the same - when you are playing a safe place. (Your descriptions brought a mental picture of Blue Brothers 2000 where they were playing behind the chicken wire with bottles and stuff being thrown at them)

Okay, I'm done rambling now.

I'm more of a Ceramic Disc and Vitamin-Q/Paper In Oil guy. Orange Drops in both Poly and Mylar are in between the two in character. The Mylar is closer to a Paper In Oil in a clean character than the Poly. The Poly is closer to a Ceramic Disc but has less crunch. Which cap to use depends on a lot of factors. As a rule Fender used what they could get really cheap.

The Paper In Oil ones, the Vitamin-Q type, are the cleanest sounding. Some people switching from a ceramic disc to a paper in oil will hate it at first thinking it sounds dull. They actually miss the distortion! Still though if you are using any outboard processing then I'd go with the paper in oil Vitamin-Q type because you can dirty up a clean tone with pedals or processing...but you can't clean up an inherently dirty tone.

Differences in the steps between the Ceramic Disc, to the Poly, to the Mylar to the PIO are very subtle. However the difference between Ceramic Disc and PIO is striking. So those are the two caps I use the most. I tend to not use the Orange Drops much any more.
