Hmmm .....interesting,......I haven't seen (in person) any recent Jaco basses post October 2007 so i can't comment but interestingly enough,...I first saw mine at my local music store in the fall of 2007.....around October-November,... everytime I would go to the music store for Strings or Bass magazines it would still be there & I would end up playing it for 20 minutes or so & then in April 2008 I walked in the store & slapped a $100.00 down on it & said put it on hold,.........I then payed for it & picked it up a few weeks later,.........Mine must be one of the last one's with the dot on the Fret Line.... Cool!! :)
I think I prefer the dots on the fret line.... & at some point I'd like to tackle a Tony Franklin fretless with just the side dots & no dots or lines on the fret board.[/quote]

James I am glad to hear those dots are on the line and you also like that. I have 3 fretless and the Jaco is the only bass with dots on the line. Going back and forth between them I noticed I get confused by those centered dots.

For some reason when I first got the Jaco I was not pleased with the color of the fretboard so I decided to stain her down with something I found at Stewmac...a very dark brown stain and when that was dry I used an oil finish top coat. I forget the actual product names but I still have the empty bottles somewhere if anyone is interested.
Anyway the point is I can hardly see lines or dots on the board and I think I like it better that way. I have heard great reviews on the Tony Franklin and came close to buying one. Let us know if you take the plunge. It would be a nice addition to your already great collection of basses. After I stained the Jaco board I wondered if I affected the sound quality of the Pau Ferro

I'll definitely let you guys know if I take the plunge & get a Tony Franklin Fretless P-bass ...I'd probably get the Black one & it will probably be in a year or so as I just added a 2012 Select Jazz bass to the arsenal......... The Tony Franklin Fretless is a great bass (the Fretted version is too) unfortunately you don't hear to many guys talking about them here on the Forum...

I don't know but it did come from Fender. Yeah, you know Fender, the company that put stacked knobs on their '62 Reissue AVRI Jazz. Read "The Bass Book" or other references and you will find out stacked knobs were phased out in '61 I beleive? But I guess that's another post......

I'll have to read up on this regarding the stacked knobs,.........but here's a little info with regard to the stacked knobs,.......I was recently reading the September 2012 issue of Bass Guitar Magazine,.....it was a Tribute issue to Jaco that I bought but never had time to read....the interview was from 1977 when he was fresh on the scene & in demand,.......anyway apparently Jaco's Bass (the '62 that would become his Fretless) had stacked concentric knobs on it & he swapped them out for the standard non stacked knobs............I went Hmmmm?? when I read this little tid bit...

Wow that is interesting. I just found one of the sources I read regarding those stacked knobs. This is from "The Fender Bass, an illistrated history: "The stacked concentric controls of 1960 were replaced with a master tone and independent volumes. The new control changeover was completed by 1962".
Knowing how Fender does things, Jaco may have had a stacked knob array on his B.O.D. Most likely left over parts from previous year and Fender being thrifty, utilizes everything! I have stacked knobs on my AVRI '62 and really like them. Some say sonically they are equal to V/V/T but it sounds different to me. Experts may disagree

interesting & don't forget Jaco bought the '62 B.O.D. used so there may have been a modification done before he bought it (with regard to the knobs) , & he also had a 1960 Fretted Jazz bass & that one would have definitely had stacked knobs....

I'm convinced that the American Standard line is the closet thing to what the original Fender bass. Now before anybody gets their panties in a knot, that's just my opinion.

Thanks to all who have contributed to the thread on the various Jaco models. I think it's an Artist for me!

Oops. I don't suppose you would consider flying to FL to make this work...LOL.

Enjoy your Jaco, I really like mine, but I want to go back a bit further. The side markers being between instead of on, on my 2012, does not help a fretless newbie like me. But the bass plays really nice, great sound, comes with flat wounds, it is all good. You will enjoy it.
