I know that Fender have made various Jaco Pastorius Jazz Bass models i.e. Tribute, Artist & Custom Shop but does anyone know when and what was released in chronological order? Any info appreciated.

I am not sure which came first, the chicken or the egg. The distressed tribute model is still available new, made in the custom shop, part #0196108. Likewise, the artist model is still available new, part #019620. I don't know which was produced first.

Ed Roman was quoted as saying the tribute might be the best jazz bass on the market today. They sell in the $4000s with a pretty wide range of pricing.

The artist model is pretty much $1799.00 wherever you go but if you look around, you can find them cheaper. I paid $1200 for mine because it has a little hole in the finish. (see pic) Please don't mind the fingerprints (and my foot), the flaw is just above and behind the bridge pup.

I have really enjoyed my artist model and I am seriously considering the upgrade at some point because it will well spoken of, and because it is just drop deal cool. The pic on the Fender site really doesn't do it justice...look around a bit.

Steve

Yes, the fretted signature model was discontinued I THINK around 2007. They were not produced in the custom shop but are still a bass of interest. Not sure about that disc. date, a bit of guess there, but I think I am close.

I own the Artist series model and like it. As far as I know Fender made 3 total. 2 in the Artist series: Fretless and Fretted. Third was the custom shop Tribute model which is a relic (distressed body).
I do not have any info on the timeline though.

I REALLY want the Custom Shop model as I hear the neck is fantastic. The relic thing does not bother me.

It is still a bit confusion for me.

A few years ago I bought a second hand Jaco Jazz Bass, no relic, fretless and pao ferro fingerboard. The serial number (on the neckplate) is T9xxxxx. The side position markers are not centered between frets but on the fret(line). The signature is also on the neckplate.

The fender website tells me a Txxxxx number is used for Tribute models.

Could it be that in 1999 they called it a tribute model and later a signature model (when they started to make also a custom shop model?

Was the model of 1999 made in Japan?

All 3 versions of the Jaco Pastorius Jazz bass were introduced in 1999 (as per "The Bass Book" ....a resource that I think all bassists should have & it's loaded with a lot of cool Bass facts) The artist model came with a Rosewood fretboard on both fretted & fretless models & the optional Pau Ferro (for Fretless) was introduced in 2001 & then in 2003 onward Pau Ferro has been the only fretboard wood offered on the artist model.
Pau Ferro is a better fretboard wood tone -wise in my opinion, though I think Ebony would have also been a nice alternate to Rosewood. Both Fretted & fretless basses come stock with Fender Vintage pickups & the fretted Jaco Bass was in production until 2003. The Artist model also comes stock with Fender Stainless Steel 9050M Flatwound strings. FYI for those who may not know why the side dots on the neck of the Jaco fretless are on the fret line & not the middle of the fret,....the reason for the side dots being placed on the fret line & not in the middle of the fret is because on a fretless bass you have to play your notes on the fret line to be in tune. In other words a G is played on the dotted G/fret line & an A note is played the same way & so on....an F# would be played on an un-dotted fret line etc..

The Custom Shop Jaco Pastorius Jazz bass was also introduced in 1999 & is offered only with a rosewood fretboard (true to the original) & is coated with a thick epoxy just like Jaco's original "Bass of Doom" Hence the strings that come stock on the Custom Shop version are Roundwound Fender Super Bass 7250ML's ( I've noticed that for some reason in the last few years Fender has started stringing many of their basses (but not all of them) with medium Light strings....)
The Custom Shop Jaco bass also comes stock with Custom Shop 60's single coil pickups & then of course there's the distressing on the bass & the certificate of authenticity.

So there you have it,....... I have the Artist model myself it's a ( 2007 model that I bought new in early 2008) & I love it,......I think this is a great bass........ :)

This thread should be re-titled "Everything you ever wanted to know about Jaco basses".

Good job guys, you've got me G.A.S.ing again.

Looks like possibly, maybe I'll get the Bronco 40, James. I'm sitting here looking at three perfectly fine bass amps as i write this, but then, everybody knows it's bad luck to have an odd number of bass amps. :D

Yes Oxfan you definitely need another amp to even it out & the Bronco 40 at $249.00 won't put a dent in the finances........ :) & I also think you need to ad another Bass to your arsenal ...... :)

Great info James!
Sorry to add more confusion but I noticed the side dots on some Jaco Artist Series were centered between the lines and some were not (Mine are on the lines where I like them :D
I inquired about this to Fender via email and they explained dots went from on the fretline to centered, in between the fretline in October 2007.
Now is this acurate?, I don't know but it did come from Fender. Yeah, you know Fender, the company that put stacked knobs on their '62 Reissue AVRI Jazz. Read "The Bass Book" or other references and you will find out stacked knobs were phased out in '61 I beleive? But I guess that's another post......

I need to reply to a couple "everything you wanted to know about Jaco Jazz but were afraid to ask". From the bottom up.

Oxfan, not sure about your amp but I know you need another bass in your arsenal. I just added a ridiculous #31 yesterday, but I am thinning the herd on eBay.

Jazzbassjo, your are correct. The artist series now has side dots between the frets. I love the bass, but it makes me think a bit more than I like. The neck is also lined, which helps if I am sitting in my Lazyboy, not a bunch otherwise. As a fretless newbie, it makes a bit tougher to hit it right.

James, believe it or not, I do not have the Bass Book. I have a lot of books, but not that one. Based on your recommendation that will be resolved this evening assuming Amazon has it. Thank you my friend.

TonH, I have never seen a Jaco that I know was made in Japan, but don't take that for a fact as I am really new to this line of basses. Heck, they could all be, except custom shop, MIJ. I sometimes make assumptions, bad habit, which is why I stick to older basses. Group, please correct me.

I have searched out information on the Custom Shop version from everyone I know. I mean everyone! I have located 5 CS Jaco's within this group. None of them are even considering moving away from it. I don't imagine many of us care about the relic thing, unless it is because it was played, but 5 for 5 love the bass for all the right reasons. I guarantee two things. One, you will find that bass in my collection. Two, you will find my Artist Series for sale. I love my AS Jaco, but a collection needs to improve, always. At least that is my excuse.

Sorry for the ramble. Nice thread.

Steve

Good job, .....you'll really enjoy it especially since you've got a collection of basses......my copy of the book has info dating up to 2009.....it had just been updated when I bought it in December 2009......I'm not sure if it's been updated since 2009....still a great book..

Hmmm .....interesting,......I haven't seen (in person) any recent Jaco basses post October 2007 so i can't comment but interestingly enough,...I first saw mine at my local music store in the fall of 2007.....around October-November,... everytime I would go to the music store for Strings or Bass magazines it would still be there & I would end up playing it for 20 minutes or so & then in April 2008 I walked in the store & slapped a $100.00 down on it & said put it on hold,.........I then payed for it & picked it up a few weeks later,.........Mine must be one of the last one's with the dot on the Fret Line.... Cool!! :)
I think I prefer the dots on the fret line.... & at some point I'd like to tackle a Tony Franklin fretless with just the side dots & no dots or lines on the fret board.

I'll have to read up on this regarding the stacked knobs,.........but here's a little info with regard to the stacked knobs,.......I was recently reading the September 2012 issue of Bass Guitar Magazine,.....it was a Tribute issue to Jaco that I bought but never had time to read....the interview was from 1977 when he was fresh on the scene & in demand,.......anyway apparently Jaco's Bass (the '62 that would become his Fretless) had stacked concentric knobs on it & he swapped them out for the standard non stacked knobs............I went Hmmmm?? when I read this little tid bit...
