Recently in my 2005 Fender jazz I put in a couple of Seymour Duncan Quarter pounders, A badass II bridge and I'm about to drop a brass nut in the bad girl to finish her off.

I'm thinking about changing the standard Tort shell PG to a Pearl PG.

I put a set of Jason Lollar pickups in my Road Worn Jazz bass. They sound great in that instrument! They definitely have a fuller, biting tone than the stock pickups.

I rarely do mods to MIA guitars and basses beyond reversable cosmetic changes like scratchplates, control knobs and the like. I've used MIMs and Korean models for that kind of excercise where future resale value is much less affected by non-factory soldered connections and/or extra holes or routing or non-original necks. The only mod I've done to my new MIA Deluxe Jazz was to install a black moto guard. It's quite likely I won't go any further than that with it.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

Using 0.1 microfarads capacitors (instead of the stock 0.05 or 0.047) will give a much darker or bassy tone when you roll off the tone potentiometer.

The best mod that has the best direct result out of any mod I have ever done to a bass is changing pickups. I've pretty much stuck to the same 3 companies pickups= Fender (Mod Shop, Noiseless, etc.) , Dimarzio Model P and J, and Duncan Antiquity and Basslines. I never have really liked the Bassline pickups I've installed. I put up with them and usually change them out. I won't buy any more of those. I have always liked the way Bartolinis sounded in the basses I've played with them but never pulled the chord on a set. If I were going to try something else it would probably be the Barts'.

I think I've done every mod or changed every part on a Jazz or P that I have owned or built at one time or another. Some of the basses I do not touch as far as mods if they sound good. The only reason for the most part (IMO) to mod a Fender Jazz or a P is if it just doesn't sound that good to me. Cosmetic changes are a different thing.

I've changed pickups in every Mex Fender I've had . I've changed tuners (when I can) many times to the Vintage reverse kind. If I build a Fender it's either Ash or Alder, Maple Neck, Vintage tuners, bone nut, Dimarzios or Antiquity, Shaller locks, Standard Fender style bridge, 250K pots, 05 cap, stock wiring, copper shield, parchment or tortoise guard, Rotosound strings, medium Jumbo frets ( vintage style frets are okay too- it just depends),

I prefer nitro finish if possible for any guitar regardless of what it is. The absolute best sounding guitars to me have a nitro finish -- that's hands down as far as I think. I'm into that killer Fender bass sound. That's what it's all about. Stings bass-- the guy in Heart- Glenn Hughes - Tim B Schmidt- are just a few who have the sound. The Amp is important but I feel that if the bass has a good sound to begin with it will make any amp sound good (within reason).

Pre CBS, CBS, 80's, 2000 ( and beyond) era all sound different to me. The biggest sound improvement in modern times to me is in the Mexican models even though I change out pickups in them. They are better instruments than they were in the 90's- especially in the early 90's. I know I may sound opinionated but I've owned close to 100 basses and I'm just reflecting on what I remember about them. I reflect upon which basses I should not have sold or traded away too!!!!! :D

I had a Squier CV 60's Jazz, and was ready to replace the tuners. I would have left the rest stock. They're making great pickups in China.

Bartolini pickups are great sounding! I have a cousin who has the ASJBV from late 90's and replaced the original pickups with passive Bartolinis and it sounds killer!
