I am a guitar player who occasionally plays bass. I currently own a Mexican Deluxe Jazz V, but out of curiosity, I tried out a new American Deluxe Jazz V at Guitar Center this weekend (well, I wanted to try out a couple of Strats, but the guitar section was too crowded...the bass section was a virtual ghost town). Let me just say that the American Deluxe Jazz V is light years ahead of my MIM in terms of playability. It felt like a Jazz Bass....my MIM's neck feels chunky and not as comfortable to play. With the American, you almost don't even realize that this is a 5-string bass and I did find the the notes along the entire length of the low B to be well defined and opens up the potential of playing in different positions. Maybe my bass is in bad need of a set-up, but it's almost hard to believe that these two instruments were made by the same company. Fender may have been a bit slow to the 5-string party, but they've made up for lost time with this one.

There are some MIM Fender Basses that have nice necks, The Duff P-Bass, Road worn P-bass & Jazz basses & The Reggie Hamilton Jazz bass are just a few example of good MIM basses ....( I also own the Reggie Hamilton Jazz bass ......first time I played it I couldn't believe it was MIM ...........I also own a 2011 American Deluxe Jazz bass 5 with natural finish & you're right it's an Awesome Bass, & as I've said here before on this Forum,.....Fender hit the ball out of the park with this bass,....however there was a batch of these basses that had pickup hum issues (apparently the problem was mostly found with the Bridge pickup) but Fender has since remedied the situation & Fender did a recall & fixed all 2010/2011 American Deluxe basses for anyone who had this issue ..... I love the current American Deluxe series ......The American Deluxe P-Bass is also a nice bass with a P/J set up & an awesome neck,....check one out if you get the chance.. :)

I've been thinking about the Am Del Jazz V for my next fiver, but haven't been able to play one yet. It's good to hear such good reviews about it. One of these in 4 strings would be awesome too.

I have owned the 4string American Deluxe jazz bass for a little over a year now. The AD is well built and plays like butter. Very improved neck from yesterdays. The tone is great with many variables. I guess the tones would be one of the most impressive attributes. The fit and finish is as good as fender gets.

Well that is your opinion and it is respected.

My Impression of the American Deluxe Jazz Bass V on the other hand is slightly different.

It has one string too many for me. That's my story and I'm sticking to it!

4 strings were enough for James L. Jamerson, Duck Dunn and Carol Kaye. That's good enough for me. Ever see an upright bass with 5 strings? Ever hear Ray Brown say, "Gosh man I wish I had that 5th string on my upright?" Nope you didn't.

I think sometimes I could get by with three strings. LOL.
