[/size]I have a 71 Jazz (I believe and it has the following markings. On the face of the base of the neck where the screw holes are there is the name Z Armenta; on the inside of the place where the neck is set are the names L Chambers and G Lewis; On the body under the pickguard is the # 192 stamped under the finish; The serial # is 311XX0. I haven't found any dates on the interior of the bass, but it looks like the serial # is a 70 or 71. Any help understanding these markings would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. ps. I have plenty of pics but haven't figured out how to post them. Thanks.

Hi Chuck,

The name stamps are quality control inspection and actual craftsman stamps of employees who worked on the instrument at various stages of production or inspected the instrument or components. Chambers, J. Torres and Herb G (Herb "Herbie" Gastelum later of the Custom Shop) are some of the most often seen stamps of the CBS era.

Sometimes the worker who did the wiring would mark their ID under the pickguard, but not under the finish since this was during assembly after finishing. I'm not sure what an ink stamped number under the finish means.

Sometimes in the factory service or factory refinish process in the pre-CBS and CBS eras hammered alpha/numeric characters were hammered into the finish so the finishing dept would know what color to apply such as "C.A.Red" meaning Candy Apple Red, and so the body could be reunited with the other original components. This doesn't sound like refinish stampings other than the numerical format. If refinish markings it would be obvious that they are indented into the wood. After refinishing these marks remain clear to look like this:

Previous to the neater looking stampings a soldering iron/wood burner would put the number and color coding on such as in this early 60's factory refinish mark indicating Sonic Blue perhaps?

For a brief period in between those two most commonly seen service/refinish markings there were indention markings made by repeated blows to a round punch type tool that looked like this:

But if it appears to be an ink stamping under the finish I can't explain it unless it was refinished after the ink stamp was applied and that is the ID number of the worker who did the original wiring.
