I just made a switch from a Warwick Thum v to a 2012 American Deluxe bass. I am looking for a tutorial or Fender video that gives me a better understanding of the tone control knobs on my bass. Any suggestions??
Thank You
Pdur

From closest to the neck the pot/switch functions as I remember them are:
1. Master Volume
2. Pan Pot turn it toward the neck for neck pickup, toward the bridge for bridge pick up.
3. Concentric top is active treble, Concentric bottom is active midrange.
4. Active/Passive toggle switch
5. Concentric top is active bass, Concentric bottom is passive tone control which essentially is treble rolloff only and this bottom part of the control only works in passive mode and all the other controls only work in active mode.

Or something like that. These instruments come with a plastic overlay explaining the controls.

You're exactly right Dave with the order in which the knobs work.......... I remember when I got my 2011 American Deluxe jazz 5 I kept the plastic overlay on for a week or so to remember what knob did what.

What a relief. I thought that was right but wasn't 1000% sure. Can you believe it? There is nothing online anywhere explaining that, even on this site! If you didn't know about the passive tone knob you might think it wasn't working right in active mode as the passive control does nothing in active mode. In passive none of the other tone knobs work. It probably seems like a malfunction to some people but that is the way it actually is supposed to work.

To confuse things more my MIM Reggie Hamilton Jazz bass has the same active/passive knob set up as the 2012 American Deluxe Jazz bass minus the passive tone knob & in passive mode only the master volume & pickup pan knobs work (still sounds great in passive)......but if you get the recently discontinued Customshop Reggie Hamilton Jazz bass you get the exact same active /passive knob set up as the 2012 AM DLX Jazz including the passive tone knob (& of course the neck has graphite rods & white pearl block markers) .......anyway I play my active/passive basses in passive mode the majority of the time. :)

Thanks everyone! Your explanation appears to differ somewhat from from the tag I noticed at the Sam Ash music store. There is absolute agreement on the volume and pickup knobs along with the active/passive toggle switch. The other knobs differ a little. The control next to the pick up knob was marked as treble on the top and bass on the lower section. The last knob next to the jack is listed as mid-range on top and passive tone on the bottom. This explanation is just from memory, I should have written it down!

I'm sorry........... you're right that's exactly how the knobs work as per the plastic overlay. ...I misread Dave's post, ......the Treble (on top) & Bass (bottom) are on the same knob & the Mid (top) & passive tone (bottom) are on the same knob...... :) that will teach me for speed reading a post.....

Like I said I wasn't certain. But that sounds right. It should be pretty easy to figure out once you know that on pot 4 the bottom ring is passive treble roll off only. I play mostly passive P-Basses because they have two knobs total.

Won't fix my post so you can bask in the glory of being correct. Yep the midrange is pot 4 top and bass is pot 3 bottom. Otherwise I was close. Not bad for an old dude who only played one twice.

Master Volume, Pickup Pan, Treble, Mid, Bass, Tone (*passive mode).

The tone knobs are concentric (stacked).

If you have an 2010 American Deluxe or newer the knob set up will be same as the American Deluxe Jazz bass that I mentioned earlier on in this thread & remember you'll find all the info you need by going to the P-bass section of this website & then go to the American Deluxe P- bass .......then read the specs & voila your questions are answered... :)

Does anyone have any ideas about control knobs of an american deluxe v without a toggle switch? I think it's made in 2002

Master Volume, Pan Pot, 3-Band Active EQ with:
Treble Boost/Cut: +/- 10 db @ 8kHz.
Mid Boost/Cut: +10dB, -15dB @ 500Hz.
Bass Boost/Cut: +/- 12 db @ 40 Hz.

Only the 3rd knob is stacked.

There is now! Your explanation!

And here's a pic of my bass controls to back you up.
