I have a beautiful 1985 E-series Squier Jazz in great shape except for one thing. I can't seem to get the tone knob to do anything. The volumes both work but the tone doesn't do anything with either one. Is it a pickup height issue? Wiring? Maybe the capacitor? Me? Thanks for any insight.

Man.. its on the tip of my tongue, I had that same problem and I fixed it somehow. I specifically remember something wasn't grounded to the back of the pot, which actually was the reason my tone knob didn't do anything. So open it up again one of those lugs isn't making contact with with the back of its own pot (wish I could tell you which one specifically) do some research on it and I'll bet you'll figure it out.

Agree with Mewtmath. Likely is a simple thing easily corrected. Broken wire, bad solder joint or otherwise bad connection.

Can't say for sure what diagram to use on this one, but find a Jazz Bass wiring diagram that looks similar. Here's a few to check out.

Sometimes the nuts holding pots stationary get loose and the pots will spin around freely. Make sure the nut under the knob is tight.

Open the control cavity and inspect for broken wires and ineffective grounds. Fix any bad connections and I bet the tone knob will work. Check that the tone cap reads close to the diagrams, which is usually 0.05uF.
