He used a 4-string or a 5-string? Please specify.

I saw a video of him playing his signature 5-string bass in Shoreline Gold a couple of years ago.

He plays many basses in concert I've also seen him play Fretless basses in many You Tube Video's He's a Virtuoso he even plays a Stand up Double Bass but to answer your question He played the bass he's mainly known for playing a 4 string Jazz bass version of his artist model, (the same bass that is featured on most of his album covers including his most recent release)

The biggest issue is that he is still alive, out of the spotlight, and doesn't seem to play Fenders anymore. That being said... I would love to see one as well. Although a stock 60s sunburst stock Jazz was his instrument of choice, so nothing special there.

JPJ is still very much out there, he currently played with Supersilent a Norwegian avant garde improvisational group & is still producing artists recordings,..... He was also a guest on the BBC last month, playing music & chose a selection of his favorite tunes .......
here's an article from November regarding his playing with Superslient & oddly enough in the accompanied photo He's playing an early 50's Fender Precision Bass..

Here's another video of JPJ playing the early 50's Precision. Live, Communication Breakdown medley, LA Forum, September 4th 1970

What about his sans pickguard 1st generation P bass? Eh? http://www.led-zeppelin.org/joomla/studio-and-live-gear/1370 That'd make a cool sig bass. So long as they don't throw a stupid inlay on it like the Sting bass.

Hey!...thank you for posting this link!

I scrolled down from the picture and played the vid of JPJ playing with a guy called Seasick Steve (never heard of him until now)....i ended watching about an hour of this guys stuff. Love it!

What a great thread, and super links. Three necks!! I have enough trouble with four strings.

I am not a fan of the Artist models. There are so many. And so many unrecognized that are worthy using the same criteria. Great marketing. Sells guitars.

I am a fan of Signature models where the artist changed the bass. Stu Hamm is a perfect example. He no longer plays Fender in public, but his Fender (American) models are quite unique. (There is one on eBay right now) I enjoy pulling out one of his basses for an evening.

Phil Kubiki, while a stretch to call it a Signature model, did run his pioneering Factor through the Fender Custom Shop for awhile. Again, nice to play. Gives a different perspective.

John Paul Jones is one of my favorite bass players, and probably in the top five, or so, on most lists created by bassists. I would rather pay to have his signature on one of my basses than buy an Artist model with his signature duplicated on the headstock.

Okay, that was more than two cents. Sorry for rambling.

I totally missed Phil's passing earlier this week. Huge loss. He brought us great innovation. RIP.
