I want to put this out there to hopefully get other people to ask for it to. I would like to see a John Paul Jones Signature Jazz Bass Come out of Fenders Factorys. I think he deserves a signature Jazz Bass. He is more fit to have a signature series bass then mick dirnt or nate mandel or even Mark Hoppus. Not saying they are bad bass players but i think JPJ deseves one more then any other bass player out there. If you agree with me please replay and give your thoughts.

JPJ certainly left his mark on the rock music genre, much the same as the late Noel Redding. However, like Mr. Redding, JPJ played a stock mid-60's Jazz Bass for much of his career. Thus, any standard '60s re-issue Jazz Bass in 3TSB with a rosewood fretboard could rightfully be considered a JPJ "tribute" bass.

Now, Tim Bogart on the other hand......

John Paul Jones is definitely deserving of having an Artist Series Jazz in his honor. Image

What about his sans pickguard 1st generation P bass? Eh? http://www.led-zeppelin.org/joomla/studio-and-live-gear/1370 That'd make a cool sig bass. So long as they don't throw a stupid inlay on it like the Sting bass.

JPJ deserves a sig bass more than Pookie Lavender or Josh Frizbid!!!!! I think they should do it (Fender)- I think it's (JPJ's) a 69 isn't it? 68?

I agree on "no stupid inlay". No markings at all. That would be the Led Zep way. Just knowing it is a JPJ sig bass is enough. Call it the JPJ but no markings except maybe in the neck pocket or control cavity-- yeah that would be cool..... like their (Zep) album covers with nothing on them. Mysterious.

I think you should qualify to buy it. You need to be able to play the hard part of Immigrant Song upon request from Fender before a purchase.

I've seen pictures of John Paul Jones playing a sunbust Jazz bass, with rosewood fret board & pearl block markers up until 1977, as I believe it was at this time on the 1977 tour that he switched to Spector basses, ..... I've also heard that he occaisonally played a fretless though in the early 70's they were kind of rare,....so I'm not sure on that one.
But he definately was a Jazz bass player in the early Zep days...... He was also a definite influence on my playing when I was starting out in the late 70's .
JPJ deserves a JPJ model...

It really isn't a question of who "deserves" a signature bass. It's more dependent upon whose name Fender thinks will sell a boatload of basses while being able to get the rights to use their name in order to sell that boatload at a reasonable cost. Artist Series instruments are either downright vintage reissues or have some special feature not common to other models. JPJ's Fender's were stock other than the '51 P-Bass being stripped to bare wood.

Fender also seems to prefer the artist actually still play their Fender at least most of the time when playing in public, which is not exactly the case here.

Like most working bassists, he has played Fenders but also plays several other different makes depending on need or mood. Here's a few of JPJ's known instruments:
1962 Fender Jazz Bass (used in studio and live performances)
1951 Fender Precision (used on some live songs live from 1971–1975)
Fretless Fender Precision Bass
Gibson EB-1 (seen on the inner wheel of Led Zeppelin III)
Fender Bass V
Alembic Bruce Becvar 8 string Triple Omega
Alembic Series II 4 string
Manson E-35 4 String Bass
Manson E-30 4 String Bass (Single Pickup)
Manson 8 String Bass
Manson 10 String Bass
Manson 12 String Bass
Manson Bass Mandolin

Yes, a bass mandolin! That is another thing, he's a dang good musician on mandolin and keys, not just bass.

With a few exceptions (The Pino for one and the Stu Hamm models for another) the Fender Artist Series basses are primarily geared as an "UP-SELL" from a Standard Series for younger players because it has a player's name on it that the buyer emulates or idolizes and not because of the superior sound or features.

I don't want a JPL Artist Series bass, I want a better instrument than most of the Artist Series basses. I want the real 1962 P-Bass or the real 1963 J-Bass instead of a modern cosmetic approximation in an Artist Series bass. Most people who have been playing for a long time probably feel the same way. I like the Sting bass because it has a single coil pickup and is a pretty solid bass but wouldn't buy one because it is an Artist Series bass with Sting's name is plastered on the 12th fret. I'd rather have the 51 RI without his signature on it, so I got one. I want my instrument to be mine and not someone else's.

Yes I'm self centered, but I want it to be a reflection of me. This is probably why the Custom Shop doesn't bother with an Artist Series. Experienced players don't need a star endorser to say, "This bass is OK blokes!" to potential buyers. Their clientele know whether an instrument is worth a flip or not in about 2 minutes of playing it.

There is more to doing an Artist Series instrument than "honoring" someone. It is a business decision and contracts have to be signed with the artist. It isn't an honor doled out to superstars at random as a salute or an attaboy, it is a business deal and everyone including the artist is in the loop on the profits.

The only Fender JPJ used that hasn't already been reissued or in fact still available is the Bass V and I wouldn't hold my breath on that being reissued. Even with JPJ's signature on it that skeleton in Fender's marketing closet is best left in the closet.

AND you should have to play it thru the same Acoustic amps he used EVEN if he didn't use Acoustic his whole careeer. When you go to test you must pay a handling fee for touching the JPJ sig bass.

I saw JPJ in concert. He played alot of steel guitar. He had one that was about 4 or 5 ft. long. They did a few Zep songs and he did the leads on steel guitar. They were so exact that I think maybe he did the actual leads on the Zep albums that he was doing in the concert I saw. His band kicked butt. He had a guy playing a Stick most of the concert. (2006)

This is very true, ....When Marcus Miller came to Vancouver to do a Bass clinic at Long & McQuade Music The sales guy from the Bass department offered him a Sawdowsky to use for the clinic & he said he can only play Fender basses in public.
Makes sense,...... Marcus ended up using the sales guys Marcus Miller bass.

Fender John Paul Jones Signature Bass V - I might go for one of those!

He used a 4-string or a 5-string? Please specify.

I saw a video of him playing his signature 5-string bass in Shoreline Gold a couple of years ago.

Don't think that is in the cards.

I should have put a winky-face  I know it's not going to happen but to me it's the most intriguing possibility. Actually, the most intriguing John Paul Jones bass for me is Alembic 8-string
