I'm considering buying a used set of stock pickups from a MIA Fender J to put into my MIM J bass. (My bass is from around 2010, so it won't have the pickup length mismatch issue.) Two questions:

1. I read somewhere that the stock pickup for this bass would have been one of these two:
http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/099-2101-000/
http://www.amazon.com/Fender-Original-Jazz-Bass-Pickups/dp/B001TOLUR8/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&qid=1360771566&sr=8-5&keywords=fender+jazz+bass+pickups

Can anyone confirm which, if either? I don't know the year of the bass, but the pickups seem to be in pretty good condition. I'd doubt they are more than 5 years old.

2. Is there a way I can confirm that these are genuine Fender pickups? They are used and won't come with any packaging. Is there anything specific I can look for?

Thanks.

Without knowing the donor instruments DNA it is impossible to say. If you knew the year and specific model it would be simple to find out.

It is unlikely to be either of the two possibilities you listed.

The Fender Accessories Custom '60s Jazz Bass Pickups listed are Custom Shop pickups that have been used in some Custom Shop instruments previously and are now STOCK in the Fender American Standard Jazz Bass. This pickup started coming stock on the American Standard Jazz instrument this year. Additionally there may be FSR (Fender Special Runs) limited issues of standard production instruments with them made prior to this model year. However it is safe to say a general rule that prior to this model year 2012/2013 the Custom Shop 60's Pickups were not used as a stock pickup in a non-custom shop instrument.

The Fender Original Jazz Bass Pickups have been used in certain American Vintage Reissues such as the 62 American Vintage RI Jazz. They have never been a stock pickup in an American Standard Jazz. (Well not since 1964 anyway.)

American Standard Jazz pickups usually were specified to be "American Standard Jazz Bass Pickups" on the spec sheet prior to this year. Fender Accessories didn't market these pickups separately from the instrument to the best of my knowledge, however they were available as a replacement part to service centers and dealers who could order them by part number. Some year models may have spec'ed Fender N3 Noiseless or Fender Noiseless, but usually those were on Deluxe or FSR models and not on Standards.

Often there is both a parts number sticker and a date code on the bottom of the pickups. Knowing the part number is the only way to know for sure what pickups you have. In the absence of a part number sticker the date code will still tell you when they were made and by whom.

Thanks for that info. I'll take a look and see what I've got.
