Hi All,
I've got an old Jazz special from the early 80s. Basically the (now) signature Duff McKagan bass.

Now, I've since frankenbassed this unit. Changed the neck and put new P bass pickups in it.

Now, I have a jazz style ashtray bridge cover and a P bass style pick up cover. I like to use the PUP cover as a thumb rest, but with the bridge cover and Pup cover both on, I'm left with very little room to play.

Has anyone ever put J-Pup covers over the split P-Pups?

How does it look?

The J pup cover is nearly twice as narrow..Bad idea.

I can't find anything online regarding this.

I'm curious to see how it looks. I know you say it's more narrow, however, the pickups are black, and the pickguard is black.

This is exactly what my bass looks like, however, the difference right now is that I have a P-Bass pickup cover over the split-coil pickup.

Now, this picture states it is a Precision bass.

I have the bridge cover, and before I buy a jazz pickup cover, I want to know how it will look. I can only assume this pictures has split coil precision pickups under the jazz pickup cover.

Thoughts?

I've never seen a Jazz bridge cover on a P bass before.

I had a Squier Classic Vibe 60's Precision that had a bridge cover. It felt great and offered many advantages in technique...but it was a little small. I was picking too close to the bridge and getting too much honk. Now..the Jazz bridge cover is a little longer and just right for that.

The pickup cover would be in the way, is the only thing.

I pulled out an old jazz. I have 2-3/8" between the neck pup cover and bridge/bridge pup cover. Playing in that area has never been an issue for me, but it is not my primary area either.

I had a jazz pup cover on my Precision for awhile until it ended up on my Jazz. No real issues.

The First picture on the left shows John Entwistle of The Who playing a P bass (Frankenstein) with a Jass Bass pickup cover. No bridge cover however... That just seems silly.

Obviously you know something about John Entwistle. I think he spent a lot of time between gigs tearing apart and rebuilding basses, that's how Frankenstein came to be. why he didn't like bridge covers is a question we may never have an answer to!

I'm a big Ox Fan - ha. The reason I play a P bass is because I was watching some old Who footage and John was playin one of those slab '66s. Kicked into the bass solo on My Generation and I was sold. Two weeks later I owned a bass.

Bridge covers are awesome lookin, but slightly impractical if you don't live in a vacuum and occasionally need to adjust saddles.

Describe your definition of "honk"-- I can never get enough honk. If I could have it for breakfast I would. I must think "honk" is something other than what you are describing. To me honk is the central most important sound that can be coaxed from a Fender bass. The sound is unique to Fender I think. Honk is why I have umpteen Fender basses. Please excuse my brashness, I'm a bit startled. Perhaps you love the honk also-- but too much ? Wow. Okay I can go along with that. I can maybe understand not needing honk for songs like "Summertime" or " Mack the Knife" or "The Star Spangled Banner".... okay I've thought about it. I'm good to go.
