That instrument is worth at least 12K. Someone got a real steal.

There you are Brother. I was hoping you would show. I thought it was a deal too but I just cant pull the trigger at 10K. Since I am going to play any bass I buy, I usually look for the players at the lower end of the spectrum, wear , tear and all. That way you dont have to fret if you need to replace a pot or refret. But I have been watching and learning the market on the Jazz and just had never seen gold hardware or a neck like that.

Dave,
Is there anything you see that would indicate a refinish?

I would have been a little suspicious about this instrument (but there aren't really enough pics to be sure)

Thumb rests were not moved to the top side until the early 70's, & where is the 2nd hole for the thumb rest where it would have been originally fitted, can't see it in the pics? The rest has definitely been moved from the original factory position, & where the two holes are would have placed it above the pick guard, but I suppose that is consistent with there not being any outline mark for where the rest was moved to, & the apparent replacement guard?

If it is aok (apart from the additional holes & replaced guard) then the sale price was cheap imo.

I am also weirded out by the thumb rest holes. But everything else on the bass seems correct. The solder appears original. It is hard to figure it all out. here are additional pics maybe they can tell you something?

Gruhn weighs in

The moral of the story is if it's too good to be true, then make sure you get an inspection period and a full refund option. Thanks to everyone for the input

in a nutshell...
it is a 1963 fender jazz
neck and body have professionally refinished
decal replaced
all the metal had been re-plated
strap buttons are non original
wiring replaced
pots original but jack is not
refretted and nut replaced

the seller graciously accepted the return and declined my offer of 3K. I dont blame him it was a low ball offer.

So you had it and played it? The electronics were original, so how did it sound? And you said it played well? Seems a shame to go thru all that and come up empty handed. A refinish does bring the price down some, what do you think it was worth?

In my mind it was worth 5k. I made a low ball offer because I didn't want the bass for 5k. Not what I was looking for. That being said playability and sound were very hard to gauge since it wasn't set up properly. I didn't want to do the set up before taking it to Gruhn and didn't have the heart to do it afterwards.
Maybe a shame but it was an education. Finding a deal on these instruments is pretty hard, you have to be willing to do a little work and take a little risk but not lose your head or your shirt.
