Im looking at a 1963 Jazz bass on ebay that says it is a custom color(olympic white) with matching headstock and custom gold hardware(bridge, tuners and both covers).
The seller looks legit and there are many good photos. All the #'s are correct. i have never seen or heard of gold hardware as a custom option. Has anyone ever heard of it?

Sounds cool !! could we see the photos,...... since it's a custom bass maybe the owner requested gold hardware.

did I mention the curly maple neck? He did say the pick guard was a replacement but everything else was original. The real deal or is someone pulling my leg?

WOW !! thanks for the photo's, Olympic white w/ tort pick guard & rosewood fretboard & I love the burled maple neck, I did some research & Fender had gold hardware going back to 1955,( I have the Fender Book "The Golden age 1946 - 70") it was available for those who wanted it.... that's a tough one considering I've just seen photo's & haven't played it.......... what's the asking price? off the top of my head I'd think it's at least worth about $1800.-$2500. that's what the price range would be in the area where I live..

Gold hardware was available as an option on selected models up through and including the 1966 model year. The catalog shows several instruments so equipped and the text makes mention of the hardware's availability.

does any one know if in 1963 you could order the neck custom as well?

James, I am not really sure your pricing is consistent with what is happening in the market these days. Unfortunately most of these basses are being sold to Australia and China and $1800-$2500 does not buy a pre CBS Jazz bass in any condition. Here is an ebay auction for a different bass in worse condition without the custom additions and it is already over $11K

http://www.ebay.com/itm/1963-FENDER-JAZ ... 4d09345bad

I wish I was wrong as I would not hesitate to pick one up at that price.

I doubt that there is anything deliberately "custom" about that neck.

What's the asking price for the bass that you're interested in? you haven't shared this with us, ...... as I said I'm just seeing pictures, & the price I gave was off the top of my head... I didn't research it..

$9,900. The bass is gone, so I assume sold.
Any thoughts on the two holes above the E string. I thought the thumb rest was below the strings?

Hmmm........$9.900. it's good to know some people still have cash to burn in this economy.... you won't find many people around here forking over that kind of dough for a pre CBS bass, meaning myself & many others don't have this kind of cash to burn ...... granted it was a beautiful bass, sorry you missed out ..... the two holes are for the thumb rest ...... they were moved to the top around this time in the 60's....

I don't think I was ready for the hefty price tag. But still curious as I had not seen many of the features on this bass before. It seemed pretty unique and interesting.

Yes very interesting indeed,.......you know that's were Customshop comes in ...... I'm looking at 2 vintage 60's style Customshop Jazz basses that my local music store, they're both around $3000. & can be financed.... it's a lot easier on the wallet ........ I'll keep you all posted if I pull the trigger on one.
