Hi guys,

Found this bass on a forum, going for about 800 USD. It's a crafted in Japan 5 string J-bass. Just want to be sure that this is a genuine piece before I purchase it.

There's a battery compartment in the rear, meaning this bass has been modified with an active on-board preamp.

In that case the jack has been relocated to the lower bout and side-mounted.

Can your post more photos to see a shot of the pickups and control knobs?

My first impression is that it looks like a special order Fender Japan bass that was probably sold originally in Japan to a pro player or wealthy amateur through Shamano Music, the chain of music stores that owns half of Fender Japan. Fender Japan has had their own version of a Custom Shop setup for a very long time doing lots of high end basses by special order through Shamano shops in Japan. Lately these are being called CUSTOM EDITIONS and now come with a stamping on the back of the headstock. They are called Custom Edition Team models.

These are not available for export and the only way to get one is to go to a dealer in Japan, pay big Yen and wait. I've heard 6 months wait time is not unusual. Like the USA Custom Shop these are the very best and most expensive instruments Fender Japan offers. They are made at FujiGen and very high quality. While Fender has used Tokai and Dyna Gakki for Strat and Tele Spanish guitar mass production, FujiGen has made every Japanese Fender bass I've ever seen.

Recently Fender Japan also has opened a couple of showrooms in major cities with Fender USA Custom Shop offerings also. These are called Fender Showcase Dealers.

The output based on the serial in the photo from Guitar Dater Project follows:
Your guitar was made at the
Fuji-gen Plant (for Fender Japan), Japan
in the Year(s): 2002 - 2004

This was before the Custom Edition logo on the back of the headstocks.

This is the best picture of the pickups and knobs that the seller provided.

And thanks Dave, that was really helpful!
