My son plans on purchasing a Squier bass guitar. He already owns a Behringer K3000FX keyboard amp, as he is a drummer and uses it for his electronic drum kit. It is a 4-channel, 300 watt amp designed for multiple instruments and a mic.

My question is: can he run the bass guitar through this amp without any issues, functionally and in terms of sound or must he buy a bass amp?

Thanks in advance.

Generally keyboard amps are not suitable for other instruments but you can try if you want.

Arjay loaned his silverface 1978 ultralinear Twin to his keyboard player and the results were very good.

There are keyboardists who use their synths with guitar amps, here's a video from a Rhodes piano running through a SF Twin:

My personal recommendation is a good bass amp.

I would say that if it's working for kick drum then it will work for bass. A dedicated bass amp would probably be good down the line but for the time being the keyboard amp should be fine. Keys put out a wide range of frequencies so a good keyboard amp should be able to handle the lows.

Question though - how will it be used? For practice I would say no problem but playing live with a band might be a different story.

I used one at school for a year, since carting my amp to school along with my bass and books was just dumb. It worked, but those lows just booked out, almost harshly. EQ it well.

Keyboard amps have different EQ and preamp voicing, usually FLAT EQ even in amps with active EQ. The truth is that most bass amps are not flat at all when all the tone controls are set flat. Bass combo EQ is biased toward more lower mids and lows. Also often the speaker has a larger voice coil or more travel in the piston.

Peavey used to make 2 identical looking amps. One for Keys and one for Bass. I forget the model names for sure but I think one was the "Basic 60" for bass and "KB60" for Keys. The amps had identical specs on paper so far as power, speaker size, weight and cab dimensions but the bass one sounded more like a bass amp because of the EQ voicing in the preamp section. The KB60 made a passable bass amp for a little jam.

Thanks all. He would be using this for learning the bass....practicing at home....so I'm hearing that the keyboard amp would be satisfactory for this.

Thanks again.
