Found this while surfing on ebay. It's the first time I am hearing this finish. Reminds me of todays Select finish.

What do you think on this particular one I gave the link?

1. Is it original? 2. Are they really that rare? 3. Is this a Japan domestic market model? 4. What would be the appropriate second hand value on these?

Thanks..

Yes it is original. Fotoflame is nearly impossible to fake.

They are not rare. They were mass produced in Japan.

Fotoflame Fenders were exported and distributed worldwide.

Often the Fotoflame covered a less than stellar body wood.

Value depends on where you are in the world and local market conditions.

Where I live in the southeastern USA they are worth about $500 to 600 tops.

@brotherdave

The Fotoflame basses were only offered with a rosewood fingerboard, if my memory serves.

Fotoflame? I could just never wrap my mind around that. I agree that it covers a less than stellar body- so that means to me it prob doesn't sound that great (the body). I'd avoid it if I were me.

I can't speak specifically to the FF basses but in the case of the FF Strats, these instruments had bodies of basswood with a thin veneer of alder over the top. The FF effect is actually a decal.

Yes Arjay, It is a thin sheet of photo printed plastic. Correct. Once they start peeling, you are just out of luck. Never liked them much but they are pretty to look at for a few minutes. I do think all the Fender Fotoflame finishes had rosewood fingerboards. Most models had a "Hamburglar" like face image somewhere on them. The Hamburglar appeared in the same spot on every copy of that model. I can't remember where it was on the Jazz model or even if there was one.

Sometimes you can see a seam somewhere on them where the plastic was stuck on in pieces. Whoever dreamed this finish up probably thought it was a great idea. It sure was novel.

But it was not completely unlike the Blue Flower or Paisley finishes that came out Fullerton originally. Those were basically varnished over wallpaper.
