I am the original owner of my 69 jazz bass and have never had an issue. I have recently decided to sell it on ebay because it's been sitting in the closet for 24 years. After taking it apart for photo's, the neck pickup stopped working. I don't want to desolder anything to troubleshoot it if at all possible. When I turn the volume knob up for it, it sounds like a bad ground that gets louder. Using an Ohm meter, I get about 7K ohms at the pot between the white wire and the black. I also happened to notice that I have continuity between the white wire and the strings. Does anyone have any ideas? Thanks for your help.

A wire from your neck pickup to output jack is broken .

If I understand your test , wire could be broken between this pot to the other pot and tone pot. Look at this Fender diagram;

The 2 shorts wires go from pot to the other pot. sure one is broken.

Thanks for your reply and factory diagram. It does sound like one of these wires is broken and I will jump them and see what happens.

This very well may be the issue,.... I just had the same problem with my 2008 Jaco fretless,
The Bridge pickup would stop working while I played,...... the pickup would go back on if I smacked it with the palm of my hand, I brought it in to my local certified Fender repair shop & it turned out that one of the pickup wires was loose .........it was a quick fix & only cost $30.00..... :)

Well, I thought we had it figured out when I checked out all the wires for continuity, they all seemed to be fine. I don't know what else I can do without unsoldering at least the white pickup wire. Any other suggestions? Rod

You did not see anything wrong I don't know why. Or you forget to tell someting about this problem ?

Let's resume;

Pickups use 2 wires going to volume pot an tone pot and output jack.

1- Pickup itself read 7K ohms; so it is good if you do good reading.
2- An other wire must be broken, what else ? Volume at " 0 " ?

Look carefully, and can you show us some close up photos ?

ATTENTION;

I think if each pickups with their volume pot are in parallel together , you can read both pickups in same time.

To stay clear and short, you must desolder one pickups wire to be sure it is good.

You write on first post;

"...When I turn the volume knob up for it, it sounds like a bad ground that gets louder. Using an Ohm meter, I get about 7K ohm....."

I had same problem with 1984 Telecaster neck pickup : I had to reheat pickups wire right on the pickup eyelet.

I remember now.

The black wire should show continuity to the strings, not the white wire. Something is shorting the hot pickup lead, the white wire, to ground.

Ok, I went ahead and unsoldered the white wire from the front volume pot and the front pickup was not continuous. I then verified the black and white wires going to the pickup were good so I could say the the pickup was bad. When I checked the pickup right at the lugs on the end, I didn't get any reading and I thought maybe the lugs were dirty or gummed up. MISTAKE: I took a small file to clean the top of the solder so I could get a good reading and broke the fine copper wires going to the lugs on both sides.

Are there two wires on both sides? Can I just unwrap one coil of fine copper wire from around the pickup for each strand and resolder or am I just screwed?

From what you are saying it sounds like it was dead before you broke it. Probably the best thing to do is to rewind it. Rewinding can be done by lots of places. In the good old days lots of techs were winding pickups. There might be someone close by to where you live who does it. Check with a local tech and see who they use or recommend. If you can't find anyone local read on.

Here are who I'd use:
http://www.curtisnovak.com
http://www.fralinpickups.com/rewind_repair.asp

And if you want the cheapest rewinding I know of contact:
http://www.brandonwoundpickups.com/?page=services
While Brandonwound doesn't list prices for bass rewinds on their site, they do bass pickup rewinds for $25. That is way less than anyone else.

BEFORE you remove your pickups for rewind, reheat the 2 solder at pickups eyelet . You have nothing to loose if pickup is for rewind.....
BE SURE YOUR METER IS WORKING GOOD AND YOU ARE SURE OF YOUR READING.

If not sure how to do or how eyelet / connection look , post a close up photo of the pickups we can help you.

For rewind , better take your time to find a good reputation "pickups rewinder" . If not your bass will loose is value. And lost is sound .........
Or you sell it like that , some vintage collector have their own "pickup rewinder"

I've never heard a bad word about Curt Novak's work.

I never heard about those guys , I never had to rewind a pickups so I don't know anybody except most popular pickups builder, Seymour Duncan, Linday Fralin.

I'm sure brotherdave know what he is talking about .

I look at Curtiss Novak , sound serious and professional.

Guys, Thanks for all your help. I did some nosing around and found that a guy named Billy Penn in New Jersey has gotten rave reviews for rewinding classic pickups. I called him and he guaranteed my pickup will not look like it has just been rewound and the impedence will be correct (he had me take measurements of the bridge pickup at various volume positions). I just shipped it to him today and he said he will have it back to me in two weeks. As soon as I get it reinstalled and get a chance to try it, I will report back on the Forum. Thanks again for all your helpful suggestions!
