Great first post and welcome to the Fender Forums. First, how old are you and how long have you been playing? It's obvious that you need to develop an ear for tone, and that just takes time and effort.

OK. Is it because the tone you seek does not exisit in the bass & amp combination you now have? Do you need to search out and explore other basses and amps?

Flat. I get most of my tone from using the bridge pick up and changing my right hand position and technique.

Turn the midrange down a.k.a. dump the mids and put the bass a little more than half way. START THERE. Experiment with dumping the mids all the way and jack up the bass. Gradually turn up the mids and see how you like the tone as you go. Turn down the bass a little as you mess with the mids. Put the treble about half way when you do that. Play around with it but don't get "soundman disease" - which means you have adjusted things to much either way every time you touch a knob. You can do the exact same thing on your amp. If you have a "scoop" button (which dumps the mids for you) push it. Remember adjust gradually and listen to the sound- don't look at the knobs- listen. Practice that and you should be able to aquaint yourself with tone a little better- UNLESS you are tone deaf and then we need to call the Doctor.

On any bass, I always try to start with everything flat. On my ADJ5, that means all knobs at the indent or mid-point. I think the knobs are "add" or "cut" so if I want a more vintage or rounder tone, I would adjust the pickups more to the neck and add a little bass and then listen. You don't need to turn them much to adjust the tone.

Tone is so subjective, that you really just need to experiment. Really everything has a large effect on tone. You can leave your bass and amp on the same settings and swap out cabinets alone and be amazed at the how much difference there can be. I tried it last night going through a Genz Benz Neox 212T and then switching to a pair of Hartke 12" Hydrive. The Genz was much rounder or vintage and the Hartke's were brighter and more "modern" sounding. Not good or bad, the cabinets are just different.
