Hello.
Could anyone say something about the differences between japanese and mexican JB. I have a possibility to buy MIJ JB 1997-2000 year and I wonder, maybe it's better to get MIM of the same period or new. Maybe spmething important about pickups or wood quality?
Thanks.

I have a MIJ 62 Jazz (1984-1987) but not a MIM. From what I see and have heard, build quality is very, very good and consistant among copies.

Another pro: Aesthetics. MIJ/CIJs colors are unmatched. I prefer a darker rosewood and the MIJ's rosewood is usually very dark. I prefer a richer tinted headstock and the MIJs have the nicest and darkest. Sunburst finish: MIJ's do a perfect job, IMO, of blending the 3 color sunburst. And it has a really nice vintage tint to the yellowish color.

Sound: This bass sounds really, really nice. Bought it off a Tokyo Ebayer who told me it had USA pickups. It does not have cloth wiring and when I researched this model I am not so sure they are USA made. But my ears tell me these stock PUPS are not too bad.

Wood: My MIJ supposedly is Basswood. Now I have read that Japanese Basswood is the equivilant to American Alder. I can't verify anything but this bass DOES sound good.

My only complaint: The neck. It feels fatter in my hands than other Jazz basses. I don't know if this is the 'vintage neck' feel all 62 reissues have or is this the Japanese version of a vintage neck. Some people feel a Jazz neck is a little too thin so this neck would please them. I personally like it as thin as possible.
Also the finish on the back side of the neck is thick and glossy. Not actually a bad thing but some people like a semi-gloss and flatter finish.
I am currently trying to compare this neck to an American Vintage reissue or 60's Classic Jazz to see if they feel the same. I will post here when I find either in my local shops.

Oops almost forgot this link: http://www.guitar-emporium.co.uk/Fender_Japan_JB.html
It compares '62 reissues...all the Japan models to US and MIMs.

I hope this helps in some way.

Jo
