Please tell me you just found it in a dumpster somewhere or in a roadside ditch. You didn't actually pay money for that, did you?

The "A" stamped at the heel indicates that the neck is a skosh narrower at the nut than a standard Jazz Bass (the "B" neck was the standard size). Back in the day, there were a total of four neck widths available -- the "C" and "D" variants were wider.

Reminds me of the old Porter Wagoner song, "I've Enjoyed As Much Of This As I Can Stand" when I see a bass that has been though so much abuse. I bet it plays good though! If it didn't it would be pristine.

Anyway, Fender neck widths at the nut from about the 1960 through 1979 model years are:
A = 1 ½" (after about 1970. Before that it was actually more like 1 & 7/16ths")
B = 1 5/8"
C = 1 ¾"
D = 1 7/8"

"A" width necks were stock on Jazz Basses as the stock width.
"B" width necks were stock on P-Basses after about 1960 as the stock width.
"C" width necks were stock on P-Basses from 1951 to about 1959.

You could order a Precision with an A neck or a Jazz with a B neck from about 1960 through the CBS era.

Jaco Pastorious ordered a Jazz with a "B" neck for his practice instrument. His reasoning was that when he played the "A" neck Jazz, now revered as "THE BASS OF DOOM," in public he looked like and felt like a better player.

The C width was used on P-Basses from about 1951 through 56. "D" width was also an option but was rarely ordered for a bass. The "C" width was about the same as the first generation P-Basses and most players starting out on them would order a "C" neck on a 65 P-Bass for instance. These are the ones people mean when they say "Baseball Bats." These "C" width post 60's basses are very scarce and highly collectible.

I have only seen a handful of "D" neck width Fender 4 string basses. They certainly did make some "D" necked Stratocasters and other Spanish electrics with "D" necks on order. Stevie Ray Vaughn had a "D" Strat for example.

The stock P-Bass neck was the "B" width unless you are talking pre-1960 when "C" width necks were considered normal.

Today's 1.625" stock P-Bass nut width nut approximates the old 1 & 5/8ths "B"width. Almost the same thing!

Today's 1.5 " stock Jazz Bass nut width is essentially unchanged since about 1970.

Don't confuse neck PROFILE (meaning neck back shape and fingerboard radius) with the letters of the width designation. A "C" shape neck can be an "A" width. Confusin' ain't it?

All that being said, the "average Joe Blow" just went in the store and picked one out. That is why the stock widths are the most common. Only savvy players even knew you could custom order different neck widths.

I'd do it up. Hope the neck is not all bent and whatnot. I'd put some tuners on it and a regular bridge. Hack off that t-rest. Do a Brother Dave cap and proper pots kind of thing to it too. Oh yeah I'd have that hamster ready to Rock. It kind of looks like my 72 but the 72 ain't that beat.

OH, she will be a bad a$s mother-trucker when im done with her. the neck is right on the money. needs to be re fretted. who ever had it before, played the hell out of it. so, the neck is perfectly broken in. i love the way the beat up body looks. really brings out the willy nelson in her. i got this bass from a 15 yr old kid. he had drawn obscenities all over it with a sharpie marker. i traded him a bass i put together out of crappy Korean parts. the only thing i paid for on the other bass were the quarter pounder pick ups. so I've only got about 60.00 invested. the kid found it on the curb in a pile of junk. there was a sign on it that read "free stuff"..... getting this bass made me feel like i entered manhood for the first time. like i finally got hair on my BA#*s...OOPS....i mean chest

On a junk pile.... well it figures. I would never have that kind of luck but then again -- who does?

C width (not B width) was standard for P basses until about the late 60s.

Yeah I was exstatic when I got my 72. It's two tears older than my 74! Way nice plus I can figure out dates. I took it all apart and whatnot and had a real good time. It isn't going anywhere. I don't even know what mine is worth really. I'd like it to be worth 3000 !!!!Yours could be worth a lot also as well along with.

I can tell you that the pick-guard on your 1964 Fender Jazz is worth some serious cash, let alone the whole bass.

Good luck on the restoration. it should be a sweet axe.
