I've been playing bass for over a year now, I love playing and I think its time to buy a good quality bass guitar. I love the sound and look of The Jazz bass. But I'm not sure which Model Jazz bass to buy. I play a lot of Red Hot Chili Peppers, Beatles and other rock music.
What would you recommend?

full out utility

i just picked up a tony Franklin fretless...killer bass but i am going to change out the jazz Pu to a duncan or CS that will complement the P-bass PU...but i like the switching and tele/strat vibe to the electronics ...sounds great i just prefer something different than ceramic magnets...antiquity or some PU like that. i did jam a hip shot on t it though...but it came with the new bridge assembly with some mass

Pick one

http://www.sweetwater.com/c580--Fender_ ... ss_Guitars

now a lot of folks will say WHAT???? he's getting his first jazz bass.....i'm an old fart - get the best bass, guitar, computer, car, airplane you can afford even if you have to stretch it a bit...the play-ability, the worn feel if you go custom with a softened neck patina or nitrocellulose that has been ....breathed upon...

i paid half a Schnauzer for a fender custom shop 2011 esquire (built on my B-day 2010 cool) that is beat to holy double hockey sticks...and i put the required cigarette burn on the peghead with a soldering iron..and ...dragged it from the store down the road to the Prima Bistro in Langley Washington bounced it along the sidewalk part of the way....most of the way..it is BUTT UGLY and sounds and plays freaking great and it plays like butter it oooozes :D

get the best one you can afford....cuz...other than a fender bass...all the other crap above is obsolete when you buy it! keep it until your kids produce offspring toss the requisite tonka toys and a LOUD drum set at your grand kids...after all those SOB's parents pi$$ed you off more than once....then sell your bass and get a Porsche... because you will have tons of basses if..you get hooked....and porsches like a well worn much love bass...dog and ...lady... are special.

now if you are living with the family meaning you are and elder rug rat...let your old man read this drivel then start whining like &^&* and point out all the times you were good...and rock it....once you get it and you will...use YouTube, joint true-fire, find players and take lessons with players that have a varied repertoire, don't compartmentalize your music have a free mind and assimilate all you are, have heard and your "chops" level and let her rip....with a big sh&^ eat'n grin (have NEVER figured out that colloquialism)

beware...male dogs pee on guitars that are on stands.....not kidding

the Jazz bass is a sweet bass with a feel that is memorable...but i have always liked the P-bass J-bass combination with a jazz bass neck- fretless.

then get a high end bass processor.....headphone out equipped

any bass players wanna chime in?

i jhad a Fender Japan Fretless Jazz special with an ebony FB and i ended u installing a set of EMG's plus the tone thingy the yave also ...it was simply nice..i always install a hip shot...used to do quans but the hipshot rips it..mike lull turned me on to those

OK Fleaownz, so you've been playing a year and you want a Jazz. First of all good choice & welcome!

How much coin do you have to spend on a bass? The made in Mexico Fender standard Jazz is a well made and well reguarded bass, and can be had for $550-$600 new.

What have you seen that you like? It really is impossible to pick a bad one. :)

I agree with linnin as far as the Mexican Jazz, lots of color and neck options. If you can afford it, my recommendation would be an American Standard, much better instrument and it will last you a long time. Meaning, you won't need to upgrade.

I had a japan made jazz bass special fretless with EMG's and a hipshot i put on - awesome bass

two MIM teles i have used as giggers one a road worn i slammed a bigsby on and some duncan 5/2's great guitars

but this tony franklin i have is a nice darn bass for 1500 list (dave's guitars in Wisconsin i have been very satisfied buying guitars from, wildwood is great out of Colorado

or go take advantage of the big boys sales for christmas and grab an america mad jazz bass i have been using GC since the late 60's SF...you can work a hungry salesman there

the new american made are darn good basses also...

http://www.google.com/webhp?sourceid=ch ... 37&bih=754

you see the folks above are assuming you can't afford a top tier bass and i am assuming IF you could go for it...do so...if you decided to be a bass player (please do there is a real shortage of good bass players)....everybody's gotta be Joe Bonnamassa or a Steven Tyler...we need some Jaco's to emerge and squirt to the top....and don't be afraid of a fret-less..great ear training (if you play in pitch) fretless basses are a gas, glissandos and other left hand effects (assuming you are right handed) can put in soul to the tune that bend sound, or slow but right on time when needed NOTE....pushing and pulling time..getting out of the boxes....etc - good luck

I tried out some fretless basses in the local store, and they're not really my thing.

Oh yes! Both basses are nearly identical. Same p'ups and a vintage 7 1/4" fretboard radius vs. 9 1/2" for modern necks. I happen to like the 7 1/4" radius because that's what I grew up playing. The 9 1/2" radius on my new Am. Std. Jazz is flater in conture and very playable.

Be sure to play a neck with the vintage 7 1/4" radius and a modern 9 1/2" so you'll know the difference and what you're getting.

Whichever you choose, I know you'll enjoy it for a lifetime. :)

I think your best option(without testing) would be the Squier Classic Vibe 60's Jazz Bass..a gig worthy instrument that doesn't cost much.

Definitely a consideration. I never assumed that price was an issue, I know that i wish I hadn't been so impatient and waited to save up for an American standard. Mind you I'm happy with my choices.

The best advice i can give is, play as many as you can, when you play the right one you'll know.

I've tried it out in the store and I really like it but I was more itching for a fender instead of a squier, Is that bass a good comparable bass to a Fender?

Cuz I'm looking in the direction of an instrument I can buy now (even though I have to safe up some money for a while) and then never have to go for upgrades or repair (incase of poor wireing or such)

Also just for you guys who have or played both:
Are Squiers on the longterm a bass that you can be satisfied with? or would you pick a fnder instead (I know it sounds a little silly but still)

The Squier models are great starter basses, arguably the best starter out there. I've owned a couple and liked them both, but have since traded or sold them for other purchases. I currently own a Standard Jazz (MIM and a killer bass), a P/J (project bass, all Fender parts), and a Precision project, all Fender. I like all these basses and they're all keepers. But my current gear lust is for an American Deluxe Jazz.
As a basic rule, you're going to get more for your money according to how much you spend. But there can be good and great basses in each of the MIM, MIJ, and MIA lines, and playing them first is highly recommended. So go to your nearest GC and play them all and see what you like the best.
Good luck and have fun.

You can't go wrong with either one of these basses,...good choices, & may I suggest the Geddy Lee Jazz Bass (it has an amazing thin neck& nice tone) or the Reggie Hamilton Jazz bass.....( it's got a nice neck, a P/J set up, it can be played in active or passive mode & it even has a Hipshot Dtuner the drops your E string to a D.........at the end of the day though...the choice will be yours as we can only make suggestions.....Good Luck to you... :)

Linnin, what is the actuall difference from 7 1/4 to 9/12.? How is it measured actually? I feel a bit silly asking as I have been playing for decades. I ask because I tend to go for Jazzes with a 9 1/2" which I had thought was fatter (especially near the nut). Those necks feel faster/easier to play and Fleaownz, being a newer bassist may need more clarification also.
I just picked up a MIJ '62 reissue and the neck does not feel as "nice" as my others.
