As for the pots question, the Japanese versions do not use concentric type controls. Standard volume/volume/tone--3 knobs. So it already looks different. I can't tell a Japanese Pot. from a US Pot.
The Japanese 62 RI do have a copper grounding plate at the bottom of the control bay.Is that what I am seeing in that last pic? Doe not look to be actually copper.

I guess bottom line is you do like the bass. Congrats on that. Let me ask you this: Do you find the 62 reissue neck fatter/wider than a 'newer' Jazz bass? Of all my Jazz basses, the 62 reissue has the fattest neck. Almost feels closer to a P-bass neck.
Just curious.

That looks like a USA control set to my eyes.
The ground wire may have been installed with the bridge change. A USA '62 Vintage Reissue Jazz Bass would have a brass strip connecting the original style bridge to the brass ground plate under the bridge pickup.

That was obviously changed on this bass.

I would think that this is a USA bass, considering the lacquer finish, the concentric knobs and the serial number on the neck plate.

I think you may have scored a major deal with your purchase of this bass.
I hope that you have fun with it.

The neck is about the same as the American Standard. Maybe its a little but wider between the strings. If I measure it right, it has 2,3 cm at the first fret. I actually prefer a little bit thicker but I think I'll get used to it.

I am not thrilled with the extra millimeters on my MIJ 62 RI. It feels more D-shaped (beefier) than C-shaped to me. I might even sell it for that reason. It is very dissapointing to me.

What I love about the MIJ is the attention to detail and super high quality build. From my experience they match or exceed USA made. Consistant.

I love the vintage tinted neck color. They just do it right when it comes to aesthetics. The US 62 RI is not dark enough for me! But I would trade a US for mine if the US neck was thinner. And THAT is why I think your neck is USA all the way. It has a tint to it but not as dark as the MIJ or custom shop/relic types. It has the exact tint as most of the US 62 RIs I have seen!

What a mystery. Why would it be called MIJ?? If you were trading a bass to GC you would want maximum trade in value right. And the US in theory would have the higher trade in value right? Unless the person who traded it does not know its origin (US) either. Here is a link comparing MIJ,US and MIM 62 RIs: http://www.guitar-emporium.co.uk/Fender_Japan_JB.html There is a comparably priced MIJ (to US prices). Also with Nitro finish. But it still would say MIJ at the base of the neck.
LAB, I think you have a US or if the finish is not nitro, a MIM bass. But not a MIJ.

Jo

I'm NOT saying that GC would sell a stolen instrument but the idea cross my mind (blury history, no case, no bridge cover, no finger rest)...

It could be that VSP model with changed eletronics... And I know people do stuped things on their instruments, but to erase the Japan decal and then put a US serial on the neck plate, and them sell it as a MIJ ( actually CIJ cause its 2003')...

About the neck shape, I allway thought that C-shape was a reference to the scale and not the thickness itself... And when I say I prefer thicker its because of the tone and not playability.

USA Electronics, nitro and no country of origin markings possibly makes it a USA vintage RI. BC Bassman is probably right. They don't put "Made in USA" on USA made 62 RI's since that origin clarification wasn't on the original ones.

The lack of country of origin markings in the presence of a V serial points to USA alone. Add in the nitro and the USA electronic setup and I don't see anything to kick it out of USA origin. You paid about 1/3rd what it was worth. Sweet! Fix the bridge.

I've always regretted selling a bass... Wish I could buy back my first bass, a MIM '93 Precision.

brotherdave: My reluctance regarding the origin was related to the low the price... about the bridge, I think even the badass II looks weird in such a classic bass (sunburst, tortoise and rosewood). Gonna chance soon...

tks!
