It depends on the bass. If you have a MIM or Japanese model I would consider upgrading the electronics, bridge and nut. Although, I would reccomend buying a used American bass instead of a new foreign made one.

My feeling has always been that if I have to modify my bass in order to get the tone that I want, why buy it in the first place?

I have a 76 Precision, a 78 Jazz Bass and a 97 Alembic 5 String. I would never consider modifying any of them.

I like my Fenders stock, all original, untouched! But my Squire? Sure! I have a Vintage modified fretless Squier with no pick guards, I installed a pearl pick guard (I felt a little bad while nailing the holes for the pick guard screws) then I replaced the bridge with a Leo Quan Badass II (huge improvements with the tone) and last but not the least I replaced the squire knobs with the standard jazz bass knobs for that standard fender look, here’s how it sounds and looks like now,

wellll.....

i just ordered a white MIM Jazz Bass...

they only come with white pickguards and i reckon they look lame so i decided to change it and put on a tortoise shell one and a neck pickup cover.

It looks major 60's!

and all for under $900 australian.

Ive already got a standard unmodified Jazz so i thought id be cool to do this.

:o Guys, what do you think about this Jazz Bass control plate preamp Check out this link: http://www.audereaudio.com/index.htm I have an active MIM deluxe V string with noiseless pickups and it sounds really nice compared to my two other passive MIM standard jazz bass, I know I just mentioned that I want my Fenders stock, original, and untouched but this easy to install pre amp with bass, mid, treble equalizer is so tempting! They even have a video on how easy is it to install it check this video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jqQRxp0XU8M guys, please let me know what you think about it cause’ I’m so tempted to order it! Thanks! :?

Oh one more thing, Bass Player TV even made a video review about it, here’s the link http://bassplayer.tv/index.html?req=1&s ... ear_audere

:o I got the pre-amp along with a samarium cobalt noiseless pickups plus a badass bass II bridge! WOW! I am so pleased with the 3 band EQ (Z-mode switch) of the new pre-amp. Check out the video of my newly modified Jazz Bass! It’s okay, I saved all the original parts! This Bass is truly a killer bass the ash body just makes the tone shine! Check it out here:

The new pre-amp/plate has a blue LED light that indicates the battery strenght.
