I don't mind modding my bass. As you can tell from my sig, I've done so, on both. The only stock bass I have is the accoustic. If I had an older bass, I might keep it stock, but prolly won't play it much either - funny thing is my main bass is 21 years old :D

I think its ok to mod unless you have a vintage bass then it just ruins the value. if you have a new one, who cares? :)

OK, but new bass will be vintage in 30 years too?

Modifying is ok....like bridge, pup's, pickguard, tuners because you can always put the old parts back on (provided you save them). It's when you get into the vintage aspect of a guitar that routing mods and fret romoval, etc. become more important. I have several mid '90's made in Japan reissues that I will leave alone. My frankenstien moments are saved for all my Warmoth stuff. My second bass was a JV serial Squier and I butchered that thing over the years, to the point of not being in existance anymore...well i still have the defretted, wood putty, altered headstock neck around somewhere......but for the good stuff, I am learning to leave in in tact. It is, of coarse up to the individual....I mean. They own it. They can do what they want to it. enough rambling....Peace, john

A mod that I'm extremely happy with is deglossing the back of my Geddy neck. It only took a few wipes using a Scotchbrite pad and now it feels super smooth and has no stickiness, even after long hours of playing. I don't think that I took all of the finish off, but as a precaution I applies a little tung oil and then sealed it with some Warwick wax.

Every Guitar/Bass I get I do something to just to make it mine. All of my changes are reversible.

I have modded all my bass one way or another, usually changed pups or pre-amps. They have all been reversible except my old 83 Jazz bass which I made fretless back in the summer of 1985 whilst watching live aid. Actually started during the Led Zeppelin set. I think as long as you don't drill any extra holes or route out anything you'll be okay. Remember though, all these are just tools for our usage. They may be an investment, but no one talks too much about vintage hammers or brushes or pens. I read a quote from Dale Titus that has always stuck with me " The last thing I think of when writing a love letter is which pen I should use". Jaco was Jaco regardless of which bass he used. He used what he liked, but his bass of doom didn't choose his notes for him, ya know.

Uh..... mod if it needs it, don't if it doesn't.

Is that right?

What do I win? :D

2 Jazz Q tuners
Hipshot A bridge
2 volume pots to jack (3 hole plate)
flush mount straplocks
Stainless steel round wound strings
All on a New American Standard Jazz 5 string
Maybe too radical?

I would mod it. I gotta do that to mine. It is about 6 years old and I haven't changed a thing on it. And I want to. :?

This may seem like a stupid question, but I've always been curious: what is the benefit of changing the bridge? It seems as if lots of people put on the Badass II's, but I never really got the advantage. Is it just a matter of increased adjustability or does it have an impact on playability?

The question to mod or not I guess boils down if you view your purchase as an investment or not. If you view it as an investment then you don't mod it at all keep it all stock and save everything that came with the bass, hang tags, case candy etc... Even when you swap out P/U's or pots and save the orig P/U's and pots from the strictest sense of the word, its not all original now since the original solders from the factory are not orig anymore. Changing a pick guard or bridge as long as you don't drill any new holes I think is fine though.

For me personally, any basses I care about I don't mod at all, I quite frankly buy used basses that are already moded out or buy parts to make my own frankenfender. Got a good deal, on a used Fender US sonic blue (beautiful color in fact and a shame fender doesn't make basses in this color anymore) string thru jazz bass body with an allparts maple J neck with white pearloid blocks a la Marcus Miller. I'm looking for a Badass III bridge to go onto it and I just got some Custom Shop J pick ups I'm thinking of putting in it to replace the stock Fender J P/U's.

I have had the same two Fender basses for many years. With the exception of the strings, I prefer the basses as they were designed.
