Which in your opinion is the better Jazz bass?

I'm thinking the Highway One.

Well, feature for feature, I think the AS, plus 1 for the hardshell case, I on the other hand like the BadAssII bridge on the HWY 1, plus it's less pricey. For me it would be the HWY 1, then buy a used Fender Tweed case :) They're both MIA.

Yeah, the AS bridge is probably just as good (what with all the research Fender says they did for it) but the HWY 1 has a bit more vintage vibe with the satin finish and 70's headstock, which is what's attracting me to it.

I've been eyeing several Jazz basses for a while now and I'm all over the place on which one I want!

I hear ya on that. If I get the HWY1 tho, I think I'll go with a P Bass this time around - yep, I was trying the amp with one today :D

I don't have a Jazz bass, but I do have an 06 Highway One P-bass and an 07 American Series P-bass. IMO the American wins hands down. The Highway One is a fantastic bass and a great value, but the American is so smooth to play and I love the tone I get from it(strung with flats). Also, even though I have not officially weighed them, I feel the American is noticiably lighter than the Hwy One. I have played both the P & J American Standards, and came away very impressed with both of them. I like the lightweight tuners, new HMV bridge and hardshell case. Actually my next bass will be either an American Standard Jazz or a G&L L-2000.
If you have the money, I say get the American Standard, but you will not go wrong with either.JMO

If money no object i would go with the AS, but I'd end up buying another BadAss II bridge for it, or would be III for the AS? Either way, like you said Zod, can't go wrong. Price is an object, HWY1, can buy used Fender case from the local music store and hagle it down in price. :)

I keep going back to the store near here and playing the used H1 they have. Still trying to figure out how to secretly get it home without wife controversy...

You can't go wrong with one. It plays really well.

   I'm in the same boat, trying to buy a practice amp. I finally found one, but now the idea is to have it for a couple of months w/o my wife finding out about it...

Well, I just got a new Rickenbacker 4003 so looks like getting a new Jazz bass of any kind will have to wait a bit.

Awesome...the Ric's are nice fat toned basses. Not a dissappointment at all. Good for you. Got pix? :D

No pics, but it's their "Jet Glow" (black with white pickguard) and has a beautiful rosewood fretboard. I ordered it from Musician's Friend and it arrived yesterday, but I couldn't open the box until this morning. I've had a '72 Ricky 4001 (natural finish) for many years and have been wanting a new one in black, finally decided to do it. So . . . I had to promise my wife I'd wait a bit on getting the Jazz bass, probably until next year. The good news there, however, is by waiting I'll be able to justify getting a Custom Shop Jazz bass. :D

...mmmmmmm Custom Shop J Bass... yeah those are awesome. Musicians Friend has Custom Shop J Bass, translucent (sp?) blue, IIRC, really nice - 5 string IINM. Not sure if they still do tho. Those Ric's are nice guitars, so now you have a pair - black & white, both thunder 8)

I'll order any CS from Sweetwater.com (where I got my CS P-Bass) as they open the boxes and do a full inspection and setup for free before shipping to you, whereas Muscian's Friend, Guitar Center, etc. just grab the box from their warehouse and ship it to you. It's a great service and they're the only online retailer who does that. They even sent me a photo of the bass before shipping it so I could see and approve it before shipping.

That's awesome. I personally like the local store - supporting local economy and such...and my personal experience with this shop, they match or better the price of online stores when I buy from them. The problem is I gotta wait sometimes for the order.

I'm with you on that, the only reason I went online for both the CS and the Ricky is the local stores only carry relic CS basses and I wanted NOS, and with Rics they're just really hard to find!
