I have the opportunity to purchase an old Jazz bass and would like some idea of what would be a fair price for it. The neck feels fine with no buzz from the strings. It looks like it has been taken care of but does not have the hardshell case. I won't pull the neck to get the model year without permission but it is a three-bolt neck. It has both metal pick-up covers -- the rear cover has a weird foam muffle that covers the strings, presumably to stop vibration between notes.

It looks for all the world like an old bass that has been in someone's closet for years. I am told it hales from the 70's but have no way yet to confirm that. While I know they would be immensely helpful, I do not have any pictures yet.

Any information on value and approximate age would be greatly appreciated.

Some further observations from comparing it to photos on this site and my relatively new Jazz:
1. The strings do not go through the body like on my newer Jazz.
2. The finger rest is on the upper side -- making it a thumb rest, I suppose. To me it means that the pick-guard is not original bc there are no screw holes in the "normal" spot.
3. It looks quite a bit like the black bass about halfway down on the first page of the "pictures thread" but with ivory inlays rather than black inlays.
4. The truss-rod adjustment is at the top of the neck.

Get serial numbers from neck and body. Will need those to ID approximate birthdays for that bass. :)

The serial # from the backplate is 663453 if that's of any help. I do not, as of yet, have permission to remove the neck from the body.

Using the serial number 663453:

Your guitar was made at the
Fullerton Plant (Fender - CBS Era), USA
in the Year(s): 1975

Well: the serial number 663453 indicates (according to Fender Support dating data chart) that the bass was USA built in 1976. OK?
Peace. david :)

Zod, thank you for that info. Do you know what a Jazz bass of that age in about 93% condition is worth? Or, do you know where I might get that info myself?

Thanks.

I have absolutely no idea as far as prices. This is frome the Fender website itself.

"As a manufacturer and distributor of new instruments, Fender has no direct involvement in the used, collector or vintage instruments markets, and is therefore unable to comment or speculate on the current value of such instruments. These markets operate completely independent of the new-instrument market.

If, however, you're interested in determining a relative value for your instrument(s), we recommend
that you contact used or vintage instrument dealers in your area. You might consider referring to Vintage Guitar magazine (www.vguitar.com), a great and helpful resource for those who buy, sell and trade vintage instruments. You might also consider consulting one or more of the many instrument dealers who offer appraisals of vintage instruments, such as Elderly Instruments (www.elderly.com), Gruhn Guitars (www.gruhn.com) or Norman's Rare Guitars (www.normansrareguitars).

Other resources include the Orion Blue Book (or Blue Book of Guitar Values), which might be found in your local library. Many pawnshops use this book and others like it to establish instrument values."

Hope this can help you out somewhat.

Ck online somewhere for appraisal of vintage guitars/basses, IIRC I've found info off of google. Good luck...I'll try looking it up too.

Edit: found it... www.webuystrats.com seems to be appraisals are done for Strats only, but you never know, they have a # to call.

Good luck, I think they do free quotes.
