I have a 1976 Jazz, Sunburst, with Rosewood Fret Board. Does anyone know what kind of wood the body is. This is a very heavy bass. The serial is 7635240. Thanks.

Bro Dave is most likely correct...but....

..just read an article on bassist Steve Harris's gear. His tech said when Jason Smith, Custom Shop, could not find a piece of Alder heavy enough to duplicate Harris' 70's precision for the signature Steve Harris bass, he asked his father, Dan smith, who used to run Fender. His father said Fender was having a problem finding Alder about that time so they used "Western Big Leaf Maple as a substitute" because it looked most similar!! Taken from an article in Bass Guitar Magazine. Still cannot confirm his bass is actually Big Leaf maple though. And probably won't be able to confirm what yours was.
Apparrently Steve Harris has problems with his straps breaking due to the heavy wood in his bass!
Again..most likely Alder..maybe ?maple?

Fender used a lot of ash for all of their basses back in the late '70s.

I own a 1976 Precision bass that is sunburst with a rose wood neck and the body is ash, not alder.

They were certainly alder in the 60s and early 70's.

I'll bet that Steve Harris' bass was an ash body. They can easily weigh 10+ pounds.

Could be Ash..Harris' tech was told about the maple but he really did not say he found out for sure what wood it actually was. Good point BC.
