Does anyone know what the difference between jumbo frets and medium jumbo frets??

And is there a "standard" fret size on Fender Jazz basses?

Thinking 'bout dropping some change on a new Jazz and just not sure what the heck that means. It is a Fender American Special Jazz bass.

It is an online purchase (gulp). Brand new.

Not a fan of online purchases of instruments. Every instrument,IMO, has its own feel and you just can't 'feel' an online instrument!

Thanks,

Jo

The difference in metrical terms? That probably can be found through google, or one of the players around here might know.

For me, Jumbo frets are too big, bumpy and in many cases annoying. I prefer vintage size frets or medium (jumbo) frets. It could be, vintage size frets are more bevelled then jumbos. But medium jumbos usually play fine. For me anyways.

I played an AM Special recently and I can tell you, it's a fine instrument, esp. the neck. Very smooth finger board and the frets are certainly not too big.

I am still kickin' my own butt. It was hanging on the wall for $749 and I had a $100 coupon in the pocket ... now, they are up at close to a grand!
What turned me away, was the regular 0-8-15 toploader bridge on the Special. But in hindsight, that could have been replaced with a Squier high mass bridge for $40.

It sure sounds like a growly J-Bazz w/ a lot of balls ...!

Thanks 'El'. From what I have searched, the 'jumbos' are suppose to make the neck more "playable". Sort of like scalloping the neck. I was hoping someone who knows the difference AND has played both could chime in and describe the difference.

And thanks for the Fender special review. I have it down to 2-3 choices and your opinion sure helps. I am teetering on a New Fender Special Jazz, Fender japan JB62 reissue and a Fender Road Worn. The Road Worn sure played nice but I really don't like seeing my hardware so...uh..well..worn I guess! I do love a Jazz without a pickguard though and the Road Worn has "Road Worn" allegedly scribed under the pickguard.
