Hey everyone,

So I have the opportunity to get a Squier Affinity Jazz Bass brand new for about $100 from a local music store. I tried it out and it sounds pretty good, but I think I'd give it a few upgrades at some point (I was looking into getting some Fender Original Jazz Bass Pickups eventually). More importantly, I really liked the weight of it and the feel of the neck. I've also tried out a Squier Vintage Modified Jazz Bass (which also sounded pretty good, but I didn't feel it was $200 better than the Affinity bass). So my question, to you forum-goers, is whether I should bite the bullet and get the Affinity bass or if I should hold out for something better. Be aware that I am on a budget of about $250

Thanks

Get the Affinity Jazz, if it feels right and fits your budget, but don't bother changing it.
Save your money for a better bass and the pickups are not that bad in an affinity anyway. I have one for students and it will do the job in its stock form.

Thanks for the reply! Is there a reason you think I shouldn't bother changing it? I know it's a Squier, but do you think new pickups wouldn't help or wouldn't be worth it?

A good set of pickups will cost 100 to 150 dollars US.
I know that you can reuse them if you want to sell the Squire, but I don't think that it is worth it, when you are on a tight budget, to start replacing parts on student level instruments.

The first thing you should change is probably the strings but only after the originals wear out.

IMHO you can get a decent sound out of the Squire with its stock setup, Just have the bass professionally adjusted so that it is setup for the optimum playing experience.

Good luck with your bass playing.
